About this listen

Women's lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people's lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of expectations. But what happens when you're subjected to both sets of rules?

This powerful, honest, hilarious and furious memoir from journalist and advocate Lucy Webster looks at life at the intersection; the struggles, the joys and the unseen realities of being a disabled woman. From navigating the worlds of education and work, dating and friendship; to managing care; contemplating motherhood; and learning to accept your body against a pervasive narrative that it is somehow broken and in need of fixing, The View From Down Here shines a light on what it really means to move through the world as a disabled woman.

I felt seen.

As a disabled woman speaking up about the discrimination that is faced daily is taboo especially at this synergistic intersect. Lucy's narrative demonstrated with examples just how this intersection plays out in all aspects of their life. Thank you to Lucy for writing this, I hope it provides comfort to the disabled women who read it who can resonate with aspects and give insights to others who read this.

love it!

The first part of the book brought me to tiers. Repeats herself a little. Definitely a journalist book. Still I have sent it to my freinds who also, loved it!

Very powerful expiration of what it means to be a disabled woman

This is a fantastic read for anybody interested in confronting ableism, sexism, and how the two combine to stop disabled women reaching their full potential. It’s told through Lucy’s own personal narrative and experiences.

Important book on disability justice and ableism

This book is important and accessible for those just beginning to take an interest in disability justice and ableism. However, it fails to consider intersectionality beyond disability and womanhood. It relies on essentialist notions of gender and doesn't discuss race, sexuality, or class. The stories in this book are important and draw on the writers lived experience and offer an interesting perspective.

What a wonderful book!

I am a disabled woman. I have never heard anything so wonderful and so reflective of my situation than this book. It is beautifully written and has so much empathy and care within all of its pages. Listening to this book has allowed me to feel proud of my disability and feel that I actually could Feel I belong. Thank you so much Lucy for a wonderful and incredibly intimate reflection of your world.
