Summary

Jo Atkins' sixteenth year was disastrous: She lost her dad, was assaulted by a stranger, and then had her heart broken. For the last twenty-five years, she's believed that nothing could ever be as bad again.

She was wrong.

Now, still smarting from her recent divorce, pretty, self-effacing Jo finally gathers the courage to enter the dating scene. She meets Claudio, whom she vaguely remembers from her youth, but after a few dates decides he's creepy and politely tells him "thanks but no thanks".

But Claudio has no intention of letting her go.

Instead of never seeing him again, Jo wakes up sick and terrified, handcuffed to her own bed. She is given a week to prove her love for Claudio--or he will kill her.

Claudio, it turns out, is a man with nothing left to lose.

The Venus Trap tackles the emotional impact of divorce, the perils of modern dating, and the age-old powers of lust and obsession.

Boring and annoying

I've listened to books by this author before and have really enjoyed them. This has the makings of a great story but never quite gets going properly, partly due to the incredibly annoying narrator. I struggled to finish it.

Enjoyable

A good read. First time I had read anything by this author but it definitely won't be the last.

A light read!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I'm not sure.

Any additional comments?

Despite the subject matter, this is a suprisingly light, chic lit style story! Strangely, I can't quite decide if I'm enjoying or not. 2 hours from the end and I'm not if I will continue to the end. It's not real crime fiction, but works as chic lit (which I can't usually be bothered with)! I can't say much more without giving spoilers. The narration is good, aside from a few sentences here and there when the emphasis was wrong.

very enjoyable read.

really enjoyed this one. the flashbacks were an interesting way to break up the days she spent in her flat. the main character was so relatable. the language was evocative and she really painted a picture. my only issue was a few grammatical mistakes. a couple of times the author used the phrase "slither of light" assuming she meant "sliver"

Disappointed

I feel that the story would have been a great deal better and easier to listen to if there had been another narrator. I found the inflection in her voice quite tiresome. Real shame.

A must

Whilst the storyline is not funny, the way this book is written and preformed I found myself laughing at the comical trail of thoughts... you’ll get what I mean once you’ve listened to the story.

Annoying Rather Than Thrilling

I'll start by saying that I really like listening to the Mark Edwards and Louise Voss collaboration plus Edwards' own solo novels, so I chose this one. Oh dear - I wish that I hadn't bothered because it was pretty awful and I duly returned it after hearing six chapters - those lovely people at Audible gave me my credit back.

So why was it so bad? Well, to really engage with a psychological thriller it's important to bond with the protagonist/victim as soon as possible. Unfortunately, forty-something Jo came across as high-handed, snooty and pretentious and the narrator really underlined this.

Can we have more DI Patrick Lennon books please?
