Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Miles from anywhere, the isolated mansion Darracott Place is presided over by the irascible Lord Darracott.

The recent drowning of his eldest son has done nothing to improve his temper. For now he must send for the unknown offspring of the uncle whom the family are never permitted to mention. Yet none of that beleaguered family are prepared for the arrival of the weaver's brat and heir apparent....

Yet again Georgette Heyer shows the qualities that made her one of the most successful and best-loved romantic novelists of her age, and why her popularity endures to this day.

Very good

It was a very good version of the story, the narrator was very good, though a few times he got some names, words and voices wrong.
Will definitely listen again

this is probably my favourite Georgette Heyer book

there are so many great Georgette Heyer books, this, to me is one of the very best. I love the characters, so likeable and interesting. I have read the book before and it still made me laugh out loud. the narrator is superb, each character is distinct and real. perfect light hearted reading. can't beat a bit of Georgette Heyer 😄

Good narration from new young actor

A slightly different setting and storyline. Set in Sussex with smuggling as a side plot and a Yorkshire man as a hero. Accents ably dealt with by Thomas Judd. Another cracking Heyer historical novel. Not just a romance

Turns out to be one of my favorites!

I didn’t expect this book to rank among my favorite books. A feisty family drama about love, companionship and responsibility. The narrator does an admirable job, as he captures the spirit of every member of the family. Hugo is an unusual Heyer hero, as he never sounds condescending. A really refreshing listen.

Utterly perfect

How could I have missed this masterpiece? I have enjoyed the perfection of Georgette Heyer's Regency novels for many years ... but somehow I never saw or read of this one.
It is a joy. I am writing this review when only halfway through because I want to share my sheer delight after listening to the seethingly polite altercation between two valets! I truly believe that I need say no more to one who knows.
Read, relish, savour.
Georgette Heyer has many imitators but no equal.
About the narration: I have now heard enough of Audible to say: trust Penguin. Always good. This one is perfect.

Genteel entertainment

Loved the narrator’s many and varied voices, making a classic Heyer tale come to life.

Poorly read - wooden, full of errors, just deaf to the language. Characterisations not good.

the good story survived the reading, just about. I'm still glad I listened, but I wish they'd cast better and edit better. at one point this narrator has Hugo call Anthea "lad" and there are other errors and muddles.
