About this listen

The Ultimate Horror Collection is a fully-indexed collection of over 60 classic horror stories, read by four Audie-winning narrators. Included here are stories by H.P. Lovecraft; Edgar Allan Poe; M.R. James; Oscar Wilde; Joseph Le Fanu; Bram Stoker; Mary Shelley; Robert Louis Stevenson; and Henry James.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence.

Carmilla - In an isolated castle deep in the Austrian forest, Laura leads a solitary life with only her ailing father for company. Until one moonlit night, a horse-drawn carriage crashes into view, carrying an unexpected guest—the beautiful Carmilla.

Frankenstein - Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature's hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - More than a hundred years after it was written, this tale of the mild-mannered Dr. Jekyll and the drug that unleashes his evil, inner persona—the loathsome, twisted Mr. Hyde—has lost none of its ability to shock.

The Turn of the Screw - A very young woman's first job: governess for two weirdly beautiful, strangely distant, oddly silent children, Miles and Flora, at a forlorn estate...an estate haunted by a beckoning evil.

Dracula - During a business visit to Count Dracula's castle in Transylvania, a young English solicitor finds himself at the center of a series of horrifying incidents.

12 H.P. Lovecraft stories - 'The Colour Out of Space'; 'The Dunwich Horror'; 'The Whisperer in the Darkness'; 'The Haunter of the Dark'; 'Call of Cthulhu'; 'The Rats in the Walls'; 'From Beyond'; 'Dagon'; 'At the Mountains of Madness'; 'In the Vault'; 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth'; 'The Dreams in the Witch House'

14 M.R. James stories - 'Canon Alberics Scrapbook'; 'Lost Hearts'; 'The Mezzotint'; 'The Ash-tree'; 'Number 13'; 'Casting the Runes'; 'Count Magnus'; 'Oh Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad'; 'A Warning to the Curious'; 'A View From a Hill'; 'A Neighbour's Landmark'; 'The Uncommon Prayer-Book'; 'Wailing Well'; 'The Fenstanton Witch'

30 Edgar Allan Poe stories and poems - 'A Descent into The Maelstrom'; 'A Tale of Jerusalem'; 'A Tale of the Ragged Mountain'; 'Eleonora'; 'The Black Cat'; 'The Cask of Amontillado'; 'The Fall of the House of Usher'; 'The Gold Bug'; 'The Hop Frog'; 'The Masque of Red Death'; 'The Murders in Rue Morgue'; 'The Mystery of Marie Roget'; 'The Oblong Box'; 'The Oval Portrait'; 'The Pit and the Pendulum'; 'The Purloined Letter'; 'The Tell-Tale Heart'; 'The Raven'; 'To Helen'; 'Ulalume'; 'A Dream Within a Dream'; 'Annabel Lee'; 'The Haunted Palace'; 'Alone'; 'Dream Land'; 'Eldorado'; 'The City in the Sea'; 'The Bells'; 'A Valentine'; 'A Sonnet to Science'

Beautiful

Well presented, with full chapter headings and clear navigation. Great presentation, easy listening. Superb!! All compilations and compediums should be this way.

I cannot praise this purchase enough. All of the original base material for modern horror in English is here.

Professional voice actors not just ripped from LibriVox or other sources.

Great VFM and great horror

90 plus hours of very well read and most excellent horror. HP Lovecraft above all. Really excellent find. I'm sure you'll find much if not all to give you goosebumps

so slow. I know these tales and authors

I am afraid I am not impressed.
Too many narrators. the first story I just fast forwarded until finished. I didn't like narrative.
the second I enjoyed narrator. but it seemed to go on and on .
That's as far as I have got so far.
I really can't be absorbed into this as I thought I would.
some may disagree with me.
Old classic tales I thought would feel familiar to me. Yet so far ? I am wishing it was over
