About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A good job, a beautiful wife, a big house in a nice neighbourhood; there's really only one thing missing from the picture: a baby. But motherhood is a serious undertaking, especially for a wife who has always valued her selfhood above all else. And there's also a bigger problem: Temi, the wife's best friend who swears she knows her better than her husband.

Set over the course of one day, husband, wife and friend toe the lines of compromise and betrayal. Told in three parts, each voice as compelling as the other, three people's lives, and their visions of themselves and each other begin to slowly unravel, ending with a startling discovery which throws everyone's integrity into question.

Full of ambiguity, idiosyncratic wit and a healthy dose of wealth and snobbery The Three of Us is part-Black suburban millennial comedy of manners, part-domestic noir and is for listeners of My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite, Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid, and Sally Rooney.

Critic reviews

Deftly plotted and wickedly enjoyable. (Naoise Dolan, author of Exciting Times)

A treat of a debut. Agbaje-Williams has a gift of gliding between the sharpest driest humour and damning emotional revelations that incisively exposes the vulnerabilities, fallacies and messiness that line the relationships with those we are closest to. Dazzling, dextrous and droll, this millennial noir is a taut exploration of culture and the politics of relationships. (Bolu Babalola, author of Love in Colour)

An astute, composed and quietly hilarious observation of identity, marriage and friendship from a unique storyteller. (Diana Evans, author of Ordinary People)

Wow!

The author left me highly concerned for the married couple. Watch your jealous friends. 😏

3 stars max

You can skip this. I enjoyed the narration but the story line isn’t finished I don’t want to make up my own ending I want the author to tell me.

It was entertaining but I’m not ok with the abrupt ending…!

I really thought I would continue enjoy this book, first 2 parts were entertaining - don’t like the ending,
Also not sure if it’s just me but the voice or accent of the reader who did the friend was very annoying to listen to :/

Great story. Wanted more

Great story. Felt too short. Wanted more. Well written. Good descriptions. Also felt like I wanted to know the end results of the twist

brilliant

The story was really funny and well depicted. Wish there was just a bit more of the story so we know what happened next.

Listened in one go!

This was a very cleverly written story. The narration is captivating. All three characters were brought to live with author’s beautiful writing style. I felt like I was having wine in the living room with the three of them. Temi is a despicable person 😌

Hilarious

I devoured this book in one sitting! Funny dialogue, interesting story, well read. I found it refreshing and my only criticism is that I wish it was longer. Hoping there will be a sequel.

No true story

The friend was jealous and mean and that was it. No real story. No true meat on the bones. No twists or turns. The performers also didn’t do it for me.
