About this listen

An uncompromising and haunting story of betrayal and violence from the best-selling author Martina Cole. Freddie Jackson thinks he owns the underworld when he gets out of prison. He's done his time, made the right connections, and now he's ready to use them. His wife Jackie just wants her husband home, but she's forgotten the rows, the violence, and the girls Freddie can't leave alone. Bitter, resentful, and increasingly unstable, Jackie watches her life crumble while her little sister Maggie's star rises.

In love with Freddie's cousin Jimmy, Maggie is determined not to end up like her sister. Families should stick together, but behind closed doors, jealousy and betrayal can fester until everyone's life is infected. And for the Jacksons, loyalty cannot win out. Because in their world you can trust no one. In their world everyone is on the take.

Got this after watching the TV version.
The story is fantastic.
The narration is awful.
The Jamaican accent is cringe.
But the most off-putting thing is the sound of what i can only describe as dehydrated lip smacking/squelching from the narrator . Get her a glass of water!

Fantastic story. Terrible narrator

What can I say that I haven't said before, Martina Cole, I just don't know how you do it but this is another book that I could not stop listening to. Annie Aldington did a fantastic job bringing all the characters to life, she is the perfect narrator for your books.
Another recommended read. I will not tell you what the book is about, but all I can say about it is - a superb listen.

After listening to two women, which the narrator is just brilliant I found it a bit drab to start off with (just because of that) but got into it quite quickly and the story is great, you know something is going to happen to someone but who is the question.
all in all I really enjoyed it.

I first read Martina Cole’s The Take about 10 years ago and remember watching the show with my Mum. I still love it now as much as I did then and can relate to real life Jackie’s, Maggie’s, Jimmy’s and even unfortunately Freddy’s.

Great read, pacing of it is fantastic and you’ll despise Jackie just as much as a I do!

Great introduction to Martina Cole.

Would maybe include a trigger warning at the start but other than that is fantastic!

Absolutely fab!
