About this listen

The instant Sunday Times and Amazon charts best seller

“I found myself in the Auschwitz stables, and I felt an ember of hope. If I could make myself useful, helping these horses, maybe I could stay alive.”

In the darkest moment of history, one child found the courage and strength to survive the unimaginable. This is Henry’s true story.

One hot, humid day in July 1944, the Gestapo abducted 15-year-old Henry and his mother, forcing them onto cramped cattle cars in the Łódź Polish Ghetto. Like so many Jews before them, they had been selected to disappear–they were being sent to Auschwitz.

Exhausted after hours of traveling, they finally emerged from the stifling, filth-ridden cattle car. Already devastated at having lost his father to starvation, Henry clutched his mother’s frail hand, knowing she was all he had left in the world, and that he was the only one left to protect her. In a flash, he felt them being brutally torn apart.

Crying out for her, his heart shuddered as he watched her disappear into a sea of other women. Henry knew that was the last time he would ever see her, and he felt like he had failed her. He was now completely alone in the world.

Starving, and close to giving up all hope, Henry volunteered to work in the stables, responsible for breeding horses for the war effort. As he watched other prisoners leave and never return, Henry quickly realized these horses were his only lifeline–because every morning he was sent to the stables was one more morning he escaped the gas chambers.

Before long, caring for the horses became a passion, and their comfort and strength gave Henry a glimmer of life and hope in an ocean of death. Although with every second that passed, Henry knew if he became too weak or made one mistake, he would be mercilessly replaced....

This is the heart-wrenching and inspirational true account of a courageous little German boy who, against all odds, after losing almost everything a human being can lose, survived to tell his story.

THE most moving thing I have ever read

Henry’s story is both moving and a lesson. I do hope that it never happens again, but knowing human nature as it is, I can’t say that it sadly won’t. In fact it is still happening on a daily basis, but seems to be so part of life in certain countries that no one takes enough notice. Humans sadly are so cruel.

Must be read

This story of survival is incredible and everyone must read his story . Many times I shook my head in disbelief.
The truth is hard to hear but good to understand those atrocities.
I had goosebumps many times . You must read this story of the bravest young man and his achievements in the most horrific circumstances. Rest in peace Henry .

Everyone needs to hear this gentleman’s story.

I feel I know this man. His story should be told to everyone- we have no reason to moan about the small irritations that happen in our lives - once you read this story you won’t sweat the small stuff. Loved his outlook on life 🥰

Fantastic book, educational & well written

I finished this book within two days of starting it. The beginning was interesting listening to how Hilter became so powerful & was able to get a nation under his control as he did. I have a German mother & English father who were young children during these times and have both told me their war time stories. My mother talked of how upsetting she found it as a child, when Jews that were their neighours, friends and local shop keepers were treated so badly, so this book was of particular interest to me and I could hear her voice in my head saying how they were not allowed to help or even look their way. My heart ached whilst listening to this book, for every Jew, whose lives were turned upside down & experienced this horror and it ached for Heinz the child...a true survivor of such trauma ! What an incredible, educational, emotional story.
