Space Applications Economy 101, but too light touch
Disclaimers: I have been working in the space start-up world for a decade, and am thus not neatly aligned with the intended readership (newcomers). I listened to the audible version.
Good:
- Clear, balanced thinking.
- This book gave me some good food for thought.
- I found the content largely engaging.
- A good start. I hope the author generates more content; I would read it.
- I would recommend this to someone unfamiliar with the space industry (as one amongst several books, but not as “the bible”).
Bad:
- Too narrow. Large parts of the space economy were left out, and anecdotes (of which there were too many) were largely constrained to ~10 of the start-ups funded through VC mechanisms run by the author.
- Too light-touch. Of the satellite applications the author did cover, this could have been expanded upon greatly, it barely scratches the surface. Particularly applications on the edge / near future, to give the readership a clearer picture of what the coming 10 years looks like.
- High depreciation rate. Due to the way in which the book has been written, I feel that much of it will not age well / will need updating every few years (depreciation rate of the value of this book is high). This could have been done differently.
- Disengaged narrator. The narrator (audible) was flat, misspoke some of the acronyms which rubbed me the wrong way, and didn’t really do the book justice.

In all, this is a good book worth reading for newcomers not familiar with the industry. For those that have been in the industry for a few years, you may find some nuggets worth considering.

An excellent book introducing the fundamentals of space investing and entrepreneurship
This book is a very good introduction to the real and timely opportunities in the global space economy, highlighting the main industry segments to consider, as well as the emerging markets to keep one eye on.
The examples used to support the assertions are all very relevant, though as one might expect, are quite US-centric. I know from personal experience that there are many good examples of such businesses in the U.K., and very real government ambitions in this area.
Investors and entrepreneurs with an interest in space would do well to pick this up. There are many investable space companies to choose from around the world and I think this book should give newcomers some confidence when considering them for investment.
