Summary

The cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. As part of the same rapidly changing world, it shares the same hopes and fears, and the same kinds of crime, as any number of towns up and down the land.

When one day DC Simon Serrailler is called in by Lafferton's new Chief Constable, Kieron Bright, he is met by four plainclothes officers. He is asked to take the lead role in a complex, potentially dangerous undercover operation and must leave town immediately, without telling anyone - not even his girlfriend Rachel, who has only just moved in with him.

Meanwhile, Simon's sister Cat is facing difficult choices at work that will test her dedication to the NHS. But an urgent call about her and Simon's father, Richard, soon presents her with a far greater challenge much closer to home.To complete his special op, Simon must inhabit the mind of the worst kind of criminal. As the op unfolds, Lafferton is dragged into the sort of case every town dreads. And Simon faces the fight of his life.

The Serrailler series

Would you listen to The Soul of Discretion again? Why?

I have listened to most of the Serrailler books, and admire Susan Hill's writing. This last book in the series, The Soul of Discretion, has far more depth than its predecessors and is a very good read indeed and appropriate for today, when we are all so much more aware of child abuse and pornography. I look forward to the sequel: meanwhile am about to start this book from the beginning again. Thoroughly recommended.

Harrowing and gripping

Despite both the main story and the secondary one comprising harrowing themes this is an audio book from which it is difficult to turn. It becomes almost compulsory to hear it without breaks, just to know the evolving plot. The characters are so well rounded, written sensitively and superbly. Steven Pacey cleverly - again - brings the entirety to life. It is sometimes difficult to hear but hear it you must. The next story in the series is my next, immediate, buy!! A great series.

Fantastic. Details and descriptions add substance to the text. Characters are believable some you love some you hate
The best book I have listened to in a very long time.

Another Great Addition to the Series!

If you enjoy a good Crime Story with added extras you will enjoy this Series. This one is brilliant, my only problem is that I finish them too quickly !!

Not my favourite but still very good

Keenly observed emotionally but not too realistic as a plot. The Caribbean accent by the narrator was terrible in my opinion. I’ve listened to them all and the characters are strong , I feel invested in them, look forward to the next one.

two very difficult subjects handled well

Bautifully observed and well written characters and excellently performed. The author has a technique of letting us see into people's heads, laying their desires, fears and motivations bare. This makes it a difficult read sometimes -too visceral and at times shocking -without any clichéd shock tactics. My one criticism is with the plot. Serailler behaves in a very unrealistic way at the end. I cannot go into detail without giving the plot away but he is working undercover and when a problem arises he behaves like the character he is pretending to be not the policeman he is. I understand this is for dramatic effect but it tips over into melodrama. excellent book nevertheless.

A real cliff hanger!

Susan Hill's novels are always a good read, but, in my opinion this gutsy, no holes barred and emotive story was the best of the series

The saga continues

This episode of the Serrailler family trials and tribulations is a little different to the previous books. Not much on police cases, more on what is happening inside the family. This does not mean I did not enjoy it, I did, but I do prefer a bit more on a developing police case. The characters are becoming like family to me now and I am looking forward to discovering the next chapter

Deeply disturbing but compelling

A much darker tone has been taken with the themes and story line for this novel than those earlier in the series. At times this made for quite uncomfortable listening but the desire for a positive outcome kept me listening......
