Summary
In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, the body nearly decapitated. Two strands of silver hair — not human — cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make a startling discovery: This violent death had a chilling prequel. Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. One woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil. Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning — and a swift, avenging blade.

Thriller or Magical Mystery?
Gerritsen's books never get boring or formulaic, this is totally different from the previous stories in this brilliant series. Other authors have gone over the top with a reoccurring arch nemesis or the main characters tangled relationships overwhelming the plot in a bid to keep a series going. Gerritsen doesn't, she just keeps slightly reinventing the genre, sometimes with a gothic twist, or more realism, this time it's a magical feel set in China Town, Boston.
This is a good one for the more squeamish, especially if you prefer more mystery & fewer evil characters doing diabolical things.

Will be a firm favorite. 1 of the best R&I's plots
A good story by Tess Gerritson, One that brings her knowledge of American Chinese into the story. The whole thing weaves together beautifully, and has your imagination working to fill in the images and legends described. A master-class.
There is only one thing that I would caution against because it isn't given away with the book blurb, although it does become apparent towards the end; if you find child abuse triggering you might want to give this story a miss. It's certainly not as graphic as some books out there, and shouldn't be a problem for most people, but if you're feeling a bit vulnerable you might want to leave it until you're not as likely to be triggered. Don't be tempted to pass this book by completely though, it's too good for that to happen.
So far I think this story could very well be my favourite Rizzoli and Isles novel, and up until this point I didn't think much could top Ice Cold.
Tanya Eby does a good job with the narration, and that means this is a pleasure to listen to right until the end.
Overall a great attempt at both plot and execution from all concerned.

Was worth a try
Having only seen 1 season of Rizzoli & Isles I felt this was worth trying to see how the stories evolve. Sadly it didn't float my boat

Utterly brilliant
Another fantastic story woven by Tess Gerritsen and wonderfully narrated by Tania Eby. I can’t praise this book enough - I was hooked from the first few lines and utterly absorbed throughout. Some great twists as always with this author, superb realistic characters and a fascinating glimpse into Chinese culture. Utterly brilliant.

Not one of her best
I'm not sure if it was the narration that detracted from my enjoyment of this book or whether it was the content which seemed to jump around quite a bit.
I have read a lot of Tess Gerritsen booksbut this is the first one I have listened to and this one just didn't seem to have a riveting story. The narration was very flat and not the best so this didn't help.
That said, it's an okay listen.

Great find
I was very pleased to discover Tess Gerritsen and her creations. Nicely put together, credible exciting plot and well rounded characters. Very pleasing Narrator... sounds oddly similar to Lorelei who narrated Vanish, the next in the series.. and I strongly suspect I shall soon acquaint myself with the rest!
