Summary

Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction Discoveries Award 2023

An intensely gripping modern myth about family, secrets, belonging, identity and the power of finding your voice.

Emily has spent her life running away. She never speaks about what happened between her and her mother at her family home when she was a child. All anyone knows is that same night her father packed up the car and drove Emily away. For her safety, he said. She hasn’t been home since.

When her mother dies on her 28th birthday, everything changes. She sees her mother everywhere. She catches glimpses at the corner of her eye. She haunts her dreams.

And as the line between dreaming and waking begins to blur, her husband Matt convinces her that the only way she can make peace with her past is to make one final visit to the house she grew up in. With Matt and her friends by her side, she feels ready to take the leap.

Opening this Pandora's box will change Emily’s life forever. Is she ready to face the truth?

Good Story that keeps you guessing

Different sort of story line that keeps you guessing right up to the end of the book. Nicely read too.

initially confusing, but what an ending

I've never, ever read a book like this. It's beautiful, heart wrenching, raw and emotive. it demonstrates a struggle from many angles, but I think, most importantly, a struggle with her own identity and race. I wish I could pick Emily out of the story and show her how incredible she is, make her really see that she can be proud of everything is she, everything she's accomplished, and not to be pushed down into a box of what everyone else expects you to be. This really highlighted and exposed the internal experience of feeling shame imposed upon you by other people. shame that shouldn't exist. The ending of this book made me cry tears of joy for her, feeling herself unfurl into the woman she was always meant to be - powerful, strong, beautiful, black. I love this book and want to thank the author for expressing everything with such clarity and immense raw detail. Incredible.

That was such a surprise

I wasn’t getting it: didn’t like the cover, was wary about the included status and I’m not yet enjoying narrations with multiple noises. However I did like the blurb and could not listen to it.

New author for me, new story, new experience and proof one should never judge a book by its cover or an author by a story. This was so compelling it was like living the story, feeling the emotions, dreading the end and routing for the characters. The end wasn’t a surprise but I had so hoped it’d be a different outcome. But while listening to the story and getting dragged into the lives of the characters I started to understand what was happening and why and that I shouldn’t want for my own outcome wishes to come through but for the magic to unfold.

I fully enjoyed the writing it was unusual I’m in places and unsuspected but fit the story perfectly. The narration underlined it and enhanced the story further.

Can only recommend it even if it might be missing some dramatic actions for some who want to see all unfold before their eyes and not in their heads. Just let the story take you and experience something different.

Definitely not!

Not for me. A lot of the time I had no clue what was going on. I started to wonder if it was about the supernatural, but it was described as a psychological mystery. The reader was very good, a beautiful voice, except when she played the mother. The voice then was supposedly Caribbean, but sounded very false and unconvincing. No explanation of why the main character (Emily) was hallucinating. Was she drugged? Was she visionary? Did she have some psychic powers? I stuck it out because it was short and free.

Phenomenally eerie and empowering

An eerie but ultimately empowering horror handled with real skill by both writer and narrator. I can't wait for Cowan-Hall's full length novel to hit the shelves.

Nonsensical

An awful lot of meaningless and meandering imagery which did not contribute to any consistent theme or storyline.

We shouldn’t fight our truth

Great story with a clear message: be your self. At times the tale was darker and even scary, but it’s gripping and makes the message more significant.
