Good story annoying characters

Overall I like this series but main character acts like an idiot a lot of the time mainly to drive the plot.
It makes you like him less and become less invested! Same can also be said of the son. The story would have been half as long if Alastair behaved like a powerful mage and not a simpler
Excellent narration though
