Summary

A story too secret, too terrifying - and too shockingly intimate - for Victorian eyes.

Dear Henry,

I have been Simon Feximal's companion, assistant, and chronicler for 20 years now, and during that time my Casebooks of Feximal the Ghost-Hunter have spread the reputation of this most accomplished of ghost-hunters far and wide.

You have asked me often for the tale of our first meeting, and how my association with Feximal came about. I have always declined, because it is a story too private to be truthfully recounted, and a memory too precious to be falsified. But none knows better than I that stories must be told.

So here is it, Henry, a full and accurate account of how I met Simon Feximal, which I shall leave with my solicitor to pass to you after my death.

I dare say it may not be quite what you expect.

Worth the (limited) space on my shelf!

Without wanting to give too much away, I loved this book so much that I immediately purchased the paperback after listening to the audiobook because it deserves the valuable (limited) space on my shelves.
Each character is immensely complex and even the, somewhat unreliable, narrator is an enigma in and of himself.
Most importantly the interpersonal relationships between characters feel real and grounded, rather than romanticised beyond recognition, which is true of every work of Charles that I've read so far (admittedly, a lot) if you're looking for some MM works in your TBR that have real plots and intriguing developmental issues than make sure to check this, and Charles' other work out!

This narrator needs to be chosen for future books of this author!

Not the author’s best written story but still quite enjoyable. The listening experience was much elevated by the phenomenal reader, very impressed with his skillset.

Very enjoyable

Really enjoyed this book. I find a lot of M/M books rely heavily on sex scenes but this one had a nice mix of sex and story. Not too much not too little. I liked how Robert and Simon got closer and Gary Furlong made them come to life as always.

Amazing narration

I loved this story, although the ending broke my heart. The narration was perfection, and I couldn't have asked for more.

Favourite book, lesser narrator

This is a favourite book of mine and I was very much looking forward to the audio. I find it hard to be critical of narrators, but I have to say that I found the narration rather monotone. Not so much the dialogues, and voices and accents are OK. But the narrative sentences all seem to sound the same, thus turning it relatively dull. The book deserved more.

exceptional story telling.

This is my first review of an Audiobook and I have to say that K J Charles has written a corker, the main are characters are well defined and I would love to have been a member ( no pun intended ) of the inner circle. I believed in the characters and wanted them to get it on from the off which they did. I wanted to be Robert and was so jealous of him. Action was brilliant, the sex scenes were VERY exciting, as for Mr Furlong's reading it was both electric and if he voiced Simon he had me reduced to a puddle of mush with that so SEXY voice. I played it and listened to it in one sitting, more, more, more.

More Ghastly than Ghostly

Ok, so I didn't expect a story anchored by explicit male on male coupling. Should have read the amazon reviews first.

Like Holmes & Watson but w/ more magic and gaysmut

This book gave me such strong The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes vibes (an excellent film if you haven't seen it). KJ Charles gives us great characters, as always, and cool necromancy that ties in well with the characters and their arcs. Highly recommended.

Short stories cobbled together with sex

Have enjoyed many books by the author, and others less so (Any Old Diamonds is fabulous and funny). Sadly the excellent narration could not keep my interest in what is essentially a book of short ghost stories cobbled together with alot of sex. I like to get into the meat of a book, which is impossible with short stories. Gave up at 2hr mark. DISAPPOINTING
