Summary

A second chance...

In the windswept sands of the Middle East, Paul Chardy fought side by side with Ulu Beg: one, a charismatic, high-strung CIA covert warrior, the other a ferocious freedom fighter. Then Chardy fell into the hands of the enemy, and Beg was betrayed. Now the two men are about to meet again.

Well worth a listen.

One of Stephen Hunter's early entries in a writing career that has spanned 40 years this is a surprisingly dark and lurid espionage tale.

I find this to be my favourite of his novels as the protagonist Paul Chardy goes on a redemption arc that is not particularly easy or enjoyable but believable and cathartic.

The plotting is intricate enough to warrent multiple listenings as it centres on a denouement that I felt was brilliant on my first reading.

The narration is delivered very well with plenty of character and naunce. It really captures the urban environment and historic setting.

Overall I would highly recommend this story for those who would like to hear a more raw and brutal story from Stephen Hunter.
