Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
On 24 February 2022, Russia stunned the world by launching an invasion of Ukraine. In the midst of checking on the family and friends who were now on the front lines of Europe's largest conflict since the outbreak of the Second World War, acclaimed Ukrainian-American historian Serhii Plokhy inevitably found himself attempting to understand the deeper causes of the invasion, analysing its course and contemplating the wider outcomes.
The Russo-Ukrainian War is the comprehensive history of a conflict that has burned since 2014, and that, with Russia's attempt to seize Kyiv, exploded a geo-political order that had been cemented since the end of the Cold War. With an eye for the gripping detail on the ground, both in the halls of power and down in the trenches, as well as a keen sense of the grander sweep of history, Plokhy traces the origins and the evolution of the conflict, from the collapse of the Russian empire to the rise and fall of the USSR and on to the development in Ukraine of a democratic politics.
Based on decades of research and his unique insight into the region, he argues that Ukraine's defiance of Russia, and the West's demonstration of unity and strength, has presented a profound challenge to Putin's Great Power ambition, and further polarized the world along a new axis. A riveting, enlightening account, this is present-minded history at its best.

Analysis of world power dynamics
As an ardent “follower” of all things pertaining to the Russian war on Ukraine, a lot of the events described were familiar. However, putting them in a historical context is important and helpful.
The last chapters on India, Turkey and China — in relation to Russia, Ukraine and other Western countries were insightful and particularly interesting for me, a Scandinavian not as well versed in those international relations as relations geographically closer.
The book concludes in February 2023. The war is still ongoing unfortunately.

A needed perspective on the current conflict
The introductory chapters, which describe the collapse of the USSR and 2000s environment, as well as the concluding segments are of particular interest.
It is well researched and well written, providing sobering clarity on the many competing narratives surrounding this conflict. It's an excellent book and an achievement, I highly recommend it.

An important and timely history
An elegant and accessible history of the first year of the Russo Ukrainian war with sufficient historical context and an interesting view of the new world order that may emerge in the aftermath of the conflict. It’s rare that’s historian will approach event that are still underway and without the benefit of hindsight. Highly recommended and well narrated.

A good overview of the Russo Ukranian war
A good overview over the Russo Ukranian War. BUT it is not completeley unbiased. I think you can tell where where he is biased. Though again he can’t be blamed considering he is Ukranian himself, but considering he is an historian he should try to have a neutral perspective still. But it is good to have a book out on the conflict, and it is worth your time. And it helps that the narrator is great too!

The historical section is wonderful
Geopolitics spot on, only thing lacking is a critical understanding of UK politicians’ motivations in dealing with Putin and Johnson’s cynical support for Ukraine. Overall the book underlines how critical it is that we in Europe stand up and support Ukraine to win back all its territory.

Holistic global perspective
Another outstanding work by the Ukrainian historian on the imperialistic war of Russian aggression and the return of history.
