About this listen

Harry Hole, drunkard, loner and brilliant detective is reassigned to surveillance after a high profile mistake. He’s bored by his new job until a report of a rare and unusual gun being fired sparks his interest because of its possible links to Neo Nazi activity. Then a former soldier is found with his throat cut. Next Harry’s former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night her head was smashed in? The investigation leads Harry to suspect that the crimes have their roots in the battlefields of Eastern Front during WWII. In a quest that takes him to South Africa and Vienna, Harry finds himself perpetually one step behind the killer. He will be both winner and loser by the novel's nail-biting conclusion.

The Redbreast. He’s your judge, jury and executioner…And he must be stopped.

Still keep trying this one

What made the experience of listening to The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 the most enjoyable?

Some of the characters are becoming like an old friend now.

What did you like best about this story?

The mix of present day and past linking people together

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance was ok I did however struggle with some of the Norwegian accent in places, But that is probably more down to my particular hearing problems than the Narration

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes mainly because of the different time frames in the storyline

Any additional comments?

I am warming to Jo Nesbo as a big Larsson fan thought this would be too similar. However the character pops up in lots of different guises/locations which is fun

Good audiobook

I liked it. I like every book with Harry Hole. As usual, full of plot twists (maybe even too many). Overall an interesting story and very good narration. I recommend it to whoever likes crime stories.

Fantastic

Loved this book. One of my favourite Jo Nesbo’s (so far!). Didn’t want it to end.

A good twisty-turny-the plot thickens story

I really enjoyed this Harry Hole novel because there wasn't too much shilly shallying around in order to get into the plot. Plus HH came in quickly and his character is a crucial draw. Some of the other books in the series take too long to do this and that makes it difficult to become and stay engaged. The number of characters and remembering who was who (or pretending to be) was sometimes a challenge, and I had to re-listen. The ultimate twist in regards to the relationships vis-a-vis Harry, his partner, the perpetrator and more was cunning. And the skulduggery within the police brought extra interest. The Redbreast is a fine tale of gruesome betrayal.

Masterpiece

Would you listen to The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 again? Why?

I would listen to this book again despite it being a thriller/detective story. The war background story was so well written that it made me a Nesbø fan.

What other book might you compare The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 to, and why?

I like Jussi Adler Olsen's Q series and I think the first of the series, Mercy, has a lot of similar things than The Redbreast although the stories are nothing alike.

Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've listened to a few other Jo Nesbø books read by Sean Barrett. The reading is equally good in all of them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, definitely, it is a book I would have wanted to listed to in one sitting. I didn't but I would have wanted to.

Any additional comments?

I've read/listened to the first five Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbø so far and I think it's the best of the them. The Redbreast was such a pleasure to listen to after disappointing #1 and #2 books in Harry Hole series.

Excellent

I like the way that Jo Nesbo writes, though I do find his stories a trifle complex, meaning I often have to rewind a little if I am multi tasking. The characters are good and the book is well written and thought provoking.
I did find one thing a bit odd and unfinished though - cannot give too much detail as that would spoil it, but one person was shown to have criminal actions - but was not brought to book. Maybe left for another in the series?

Worth reading overall

Everything you want from a Scandinavian thriller

I was immersed into Harry's world with the narrator doing a sterling job. Excellent

Brilliant

I’m reading and enjoying this series in order, but found this one to be absolutely marvellous. It’s well structured, the bird motif is handled sensitively,, the characters are well developed and the reader’s emotions are treated to a roller coaster ride. The handling of the two periods of time was skilfully done, and I was never confused. The reality of the events, treated without sentiment was effective. I also learned a lot about Norway’s war and post war history. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

What's the audio book equivalent of a page-turner?

I first heard the narrator Sean Barrett when I bought a copy of The Second World War by Anthony Beevor. His tone, timbre, and ability to convey characters brings this book to life.

This is my first Jo Nesbo book and I'll buy another and probably more, thanks to both the author and the narrator.
