About this listen

In a feat of virtuoso storytelling, Anne Rice unleashes Akasha, the queen of the damned, who has risen from a six-thousand-year sleep to let loose the powers of the night. Akasha has a marvelously devious plan to “save” mankind and destroy the vampire Lestat—in this extraordinarily sensual novel of the complex, erotic, electrifying world of the undead.

Critic reviews

“Mesmerizing... a wonderful web of dark-side mythology.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“With The Queen of the Damned, Anne Rice has created universes within universes, traveling back in time as far as ancient, pre-pyramidic Egypt and journeying from the frozen mountain peaks of Nepal to the crowded, sweating streets of southern Florida.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Imaginative... intelligently written... This is popular fiction of the highest order.” (USA Today)

Mostly world building

This book picks up the cliffhanger of The Vampire Lestat, and while it sets up an apocalyptic conflict in the present, most of the novel is world building, including the origin of vampires, which demystifies them quite a bit. The final conflict is mainly resolved as a philosophical debate with the villain. Still, the new characters are good and it's a compelling world, but it lacks the gothic melancholy that made Interview with the Vampire so great.

Great follow up to the Vampire Lestat

The 3rd part of the vampire chronicles lives up to the standards of the previous novels but has a more philosophical tone.

Very enjoyable.

A very listen from start to finish, the story is one of my favourites of the chronicles. It is well read by Simon Vance which also makes a pleasant listen, I look forward to others in the series.

Classic

Always enjoy Anne Rice, and the sorrow at losing her this year is only equalled by the satisfaction of knowing she left us all the books we could ever want. Sharp, exciting and with a genuine ear for dialogue, she weaves a modern tale from ancient characters and does it in such a way that we can read her work easily and in swathes or bites, whatever you prefer.
