About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
When celebrity aviator, Charles A. Lindbergh, wins the 1940 presidential election on the slogan of 'America First', fear invades every Jewish household. Not only has Lindbergh blamed the Jews for pushing America towards war with Germany, he has negotiated an 'understanding' with the Nazis promising peace between the two nations.
Growing up in the 'ghetto' of Newark, Philip Roth recounts his childhood caught in the stranglehold of this counterfactual nightmare. As America sinks into its own dark metamorphosis and Jewish families are torn apart, fear and uncertainty spread.
Who really is President Lindbergh?
And to what end has he hijacked America?

©2004 Philip Roth (P)2023 Penguin AudioCritic reviews
'He captures better than anyone the collision of public and private, the intrusion of history into the skin, the pores of every individual alive.' Guardian
'It’s one of the great political novels for its depiction of how alterations in power affect ordinary men and women, and how obedience brings disaster.' Linda Grant
'Many passages in The Plot Against America echo feelings voiced today by vulnerable Americans - immigrants and minorities as alarmed by Trump's election as the Jews of Newark are frightened by Lindbergh's.' New Yorker

What a book
Excellently read and with importantly contemporary themes, it’s a shame to see history repeating so soon. Great book

Not for me
Well written and well performed, but not for me. I'm really not sure what it was trying to achieve, but I suspect it would be more meaningful if I knew more about this period of American history.

Prescient Story of Intolerance
The premise of the story is thought provoking. What's even more thought provoking is that the US finds itself in a position where thr ideas in this book could come to fruition. The parallels between Lindbergh and Trump are quite terrifying.

Flawed
There’s a good (and currently in 2023 prescient) idea of a story here. But not only is the mechanism for telling the story flawed, the structure is one of the worst I’ve witnessed.
