About this listen
From the critically acclaimed author of Hekla’s Children comes a dark and haunting tale of our world and the next.
Fleeing from a traumatic break-in, Londoners Paul and Tricia Feenan sell up to escape to the isolated Holiwell village where Tricia has inherited a property. Scattered throughout the settlement are centuries-old stones used during the Great Plague as boundary markers. No plague-sufferer was permitted to pass them and enter the village. The plague diminished, and the village survived unscathed, but since then each year the village trustees have insisted on an ancient ceremony to renew the village boundaries, until a misguided act by the Feenans’ son then reminds the village that there is a reason traditions have been rigidly stuck to, and that all acts of betrayal, even those committed centuries ago, have consequences....

Absolutely brilliant
One of the best books I’ve read, and I’ve read many thousands.
Excellent plot and character development. Solid story progression and the intertwined timelines worked perfectly.
If there was one thing I’d have liked more of it would have been more about the research on Hester carried out by Stephane. That’s just the couch detective in me though.
A highly recommended read.
I look forward more by this author.

Great story
I really enjoyed this story, great narration. I discovered this book through Audible Plus, thanks Audible, but now I have a new favourite author. Nice to have a story set in the midlands too which is where I live!

A creepy tale of revenge
An absolutely atmospheric, gory story with a great monster and interesting folklore. The Plague Stones also hit differently when living through the pandemic.

dark and gripping
this was a great story laced with a generous portion of gore. I visibly winced sometimes but the gore was not gratuitous and was necessary to a dark and terrifying tale.

Amazing and refreshing! Outstanding! Gripping!
I loved every moment of this book! From start to end it has you gripped!
It has very funny moments, parts that every walk of life can relate to. Very relatable to myself as I also live and have lived in some areas mentioned in this book.
The author has an amazing imagination and helps the reader to see what he wants you to see, his writing is very up to date with how kids are , and how kids are seeing adults and vice versa. The storyline is great where it tells you what happened in the past and what is happening in the present with each character. And the narrator gets each character spot on and brings this book very much to life ! I couldn't put this book down, it made me laugh, feel sad, understand the characters the way we are supposed to.
All in all this book is a must have in the library and a rollercoaster of emotions throughout! Outstanding and gripping till the end!!!

Disappointing
I love historical who dunnits or mysteries and this began well but failed half way through and became laboured and repetitive.
