About this listen

Often romanticized in print and on the silver screen, real-life pirates were a brutal menace that plagued the high seas. In this book, Angus Konstam separates myth from reality, tracing the history of piracy through the centuries, from the pirates who plagued the Ancient Egyptians to the Viking raids and on to the era of privateers. He discusses the so-called "Golden Age of Piracy" and colorful characters such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd, before examining the West's initial encounters with Eastern pirates off the Chinese coast and the phenomenon of the modern pirate.

an interesting history

An interesting history of piratical activity from ancient times, through "The Golden Age of Piracy" until modern day. Well narrated, the book offers more insight into the reality of piracy as well as nuances of different cultures and the impact of fiction on the everyday view of pirates.

Easy listen

Good book about a subject I didn’t know a lot about and initially showed little interest in. Lots of dates, names and locations to take in and I’d have probably been better with the actual book.
I will say I learnt something and the pirates of the real world and of history are worse than fiction could make up! Worth a listen and the narrator was very interesting
