Summary

Part One of this book tells of Christian's progress from this world to that which is to come. It is a dream of a dangerous journey fraught with doubt and constant struggles with sin. Part Two relates the story of how Christian's wife and children travel on the same road.

No longer evil, I guess

I really didn't think about what to expect - I was just curious to read a classic. As it happens, this fantasy, fashioned as a 'dream', is an evangelical, bible thumping, apology for Christianity. If I got the message right, you should give up all thought of betterment in this life and think only on the riches you are storing up in the next world. Getting killed in a nasty way (e.g. burnt or flayed alive) is A.O.K. if you are good (straight to the nice clothes and music of the Celestial city) and the (extraordinarily capricious) Lord (God, that is) is in a good mood. Getting killed can also be an indicator that you are on the wrong side, in which case you go straight to hell. Begging your way through life, living off the hard work of others, is just fine. I did vaguely know that Bunyan was thrown into prison for his writings, so I'm glad to know he got his come-uppance in this world for writing such rubbish. I feel sorry for any poor wretches who were misled by his rants. 'Fear of God is the Beginning of Wisdom'. What crappola.
