Quite enjoyable

I’m a fan of Jane Casey but I didn’t like this as much as her other books. I found the first half very slow and thought some of the actions the main character took were not very believable.

Start of a series?

Took a while to get into this story, but glad I stuck with it. Well narrated, and interesting plot. Will try another if one appears as part of a series..

Avoid if you are 'woke'!

Having just returned from my son and his new wife's Hindu/White Weddings, the racist language (although you are warned at the beginning of the book) didn't sit well with me.

This did impact the storyline throughout, but I felt it could have been handled better.

Nevertheless, this fast-paced crime thriller starts with a 'will he won't he' survive theme.
I found the Carter family characters believable and enjoyed how Mark's life became entwined into theirs.
It's not a bad read, but the racism tainted this book for me. Sorry.

Hence the rating.

Terrifyingly brilliant.

This story gripped me from the very beginning. I made sure to find time to listen wherever and whenever possible. The narration added to the suspense too. it was a lovely surprise to have Maeve and Derwent popping up too. Please keep these stories coming Jane. I'm looking forward to the next one.

so good

Jane Casey is such a good storyteller. I practically inhaled this. If you've not read/listened to the Maeve Kerrigan books, start with those. The only thing that bothered me ever so slightly, is the fact that Rob didn't have a northern accent. He's from Manchester, admittedly from money, but even so, he should have a northern twang.

Fantastic

Couldn’t put it down and hope there’s more to come. Loved hearing things from Rob’s perspective. Hope there’s more of the Maeve series to come too.

Totally absorbing

As I’ve come to expect from Jane Casey, this is beautifully written, with richly drawn characters and genuinely exciting and compelling story. I haven’t heard the narrator before. He does an excellent job. The only issue I have is that Meave Kerrigan is raised in England, but by Irish parents and she has a strong Irish accent in all previous books. Her words being spoken in an English accent here proved jarring to me, such that those sections of this book were distracting and, well, spoilt.
