About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by George Blagden, star of Versailles and Vikings. This definitive recording is translated by E.V. Rieu, revised by D.C.H. Rieu, and contains an introduction by Peter Jones.

The epic tale of Odysseus and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War forms one of the earliest and greatest works of Western literature. Confronted by natural and supernatural threats - shipwrecks, battles, monsters and the implacable enmity of the sea-god Poseidon - Odysseus must use his wit and native cunning if he is to reach his homeland safely and overcome the obstacles that, even there, await him.

Outstanding narration of this great Epic Poem

The narration is based on the Odyssey translated by Rieu Sr and Rieu Jr, the best prose translation in English without any doubt. In the introduction (wisely placed at the end in the narrated version), Peter Jones reminds us that "the ancients, of course, listened to Homer, and it is well worth following their example". In that sense, George Blagden, in his superb "oral" rendition of the poem, can be considered as a modern Homeric bard. He has an exceptional skill to modulate his voice to impersonate naturally different characters, heroes and servants, goddess and ladies. This is among my top 3 audible books so far.

Great characters

Having heard of Homer’s Odyssey I was surprised to find myself choosing this as my next listen, Greek Mythology has not attracted me before, but it is clear to me now that this has been to my loss, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the journey’s and adventures of Odysseus and his family and friends. I’m only sorry that I hadn’t previously realised that Iliad came before Odyssey. One thing that puzzled me was why Odysseus insisted on telling tales as to who he was to his family… they were extremely forgiving. Great listen, would highly recommend, but if you like to follow an order, then know that this tale follows on from Iliad.

Thoroughly enjoyed the narration

George Blagden is a talented dramatist. Would highly recommend and suggest older audible books be updated to this calibre

A true classic brilliantly brought to life by George Blagden

This is by far the best narrated version of this epic poem by ‘Homer’. George Blagden enriches the take without impingement on this classic poem. It would be an Audible triumph if George Blagdon were to also narrate the prequel to this, Homer’s dactylic hexameter epic, The Iliad.

I wish this narrator did penguins Iliad

The narrator absolutely made this audiobook, what a fantastic performance! I wish he had also performed penguins Iliad (Not to discredit that performance as both we're phenomenal)

Decent reading of iconic classic

Blagden reads this very well, with an even tone - occasionally I found the evenness verging towards monotone, but he was clear and easy to listen to, and obviously understood the material.
The story is an incredible and iconic one, and this translation is accessible and dynamic.

Excellently narrated!

The epic works, to no surprise, wonderfully as andio book. The "introduction" at the very end is very worthwhile listening to.
