Summary

Shipwrecked on a remote island in the Dutch East Indies, Captain Aubrey, surgeon and secret intelligence agent Stephen Maturin, and the crew of the Diane fashion a schooner from the wreck.

A vicious attack by Malay pirates is repulsed, but the makeshift vessel burns, and they are truly marooned. Their escape from this predicament is one that only the whimsy and ingenuity of Patrick O Brian or Stephen Maturin could devise. In command now of a new ship, the Nutmeg, Aubrey pursues his interrupted mission.

The dreadful penal colony in New South Wales, harrowingly described, is the backdrop to a diplomatic crisis provoked by Maturin s Irish temper, and to a near-fatal encounter with the wildlife of the Australian outback.

Part two

If you made it this far through the series then you know what to expect
Perhaps this should be called the 13 gun salute part two as it follows straight on from where that book left off
Excellent listen and a must for anyone who's read the previous book
Far from a criticism but I look forward to more Maritime adventures as this book is set mainly on land

Another solid romp

More of the same from this reliable and entertaining series.
Not too much in the way of naval exploits, but entertaining none the less

Possibly his best book?

I've read this series through 4-5 times and have just got to the end of my second audible play through of the Nutmeg. Although it's quite difficult and mostly subjective to pick a favourite in this remarkable series I think this particular novel is a strong contender. I mean it's got it all, the aftermath of a shipwreck, the acquisition of a new ship, a chase, an action, a rendezvous, a prison break! It's non stop action in this book and yet because it's so far along in the series the subtleties are all there to be had as well. If you are new to the Aubrey Maturin series whatever you do don't try and read / listen to these out of sequence, make sure you start at the start and enjoy!

Another great way to go sail the seas

An education of times past in a wooden shop powered only by sails and swept along by the wind. Discover life on board and the beginnings of Australia's settlement by the British, a wild country !

As always a brilliant narration by Ric Jerrom

Ric with his constantly changing accents and pronunciation really does bring the characters to life - you really get to know them as real people and not just characters in Patrick O'Brien's brilliant books.

Good but not his best.

Good book but with constant story repeats. Not up to previous standard but still worth reading.

Fascinating account of early Australia

Unbelievable transportation to the mores and challenges of life at the turn of the 19th century.
