Summary

A brand new Breeders Universe story that will keep you up listening past your bedtime.

Five generations after Riley and Clay first set foot on Shiprock, the community is thriving. Liberated from the Breeders, the new society is free to live and love how they chose.

Eighteen-year-old Meg is Shiprock’s apprentice gunslinger and wise-cracking security guard, keeping the people safe as she patrols the stony cliffs. She can hit a target at 50 paces with her eyes closed, and yet, she’s never ventured outside the sheer cliffs of her home. It isn’t safe out there. Marauders still roam, snatching up unsuspecting victims.

Then a plague hits their peaceful city. Her sister, and only living family, falls ill.

People will die if a cure isn’t found.

Meg ventures out to find renowned doctor Fulton Tally and a cure to save her sister and the town.

But untold peril awaits. Will Meg’s training prove enough to survive the night road?

Fans who love The Breeders will not be disappointed with this companion series set in that same universe.

Engrossing Dystopian Tale

I'm new to the Breeder's world, not having read the previous series, but jumped in with both feet and am glad that I did. Katie French captivated me with her story set in a truly dystopian world where medicine is in short supply, women are treated poorly and are a commodity, and it's every man for himself in a desperate life outside of the few protected cities. Meg is our plucky extremely naive teenage heroine sent from one city to another across hostile terrain to obtain desperately needed medical supplies to treat the ill - and cure her sister. While sometimes her naivete seems too much to believe, it's been a long time since I was sixteen and invincible and there were times that no matter what the logic of the situation, my friends and I believed it must just be fine in the end, right? As does Meg. Invariably, not everything is. This was fast paced, exciting, kept my interest and ended more abruptly then I would have liked - I wanted more! It's on to the next book for me! *Note I was given a review copy and have voluntarily posted an honest review*

A Gunslinger’s First Journey

This is my first book from the Breeders Universe, but I didn’t feel too lost. Meg is an apprentice gunslinger and security guard of Shiprock with an overprotective sister, Shannon. When a plague hits her home and Shannon falls ill, she starts her journey to Second City to find a cure. Meg goes on a dangerous journey that’s filled with betrayals, death, kidnapping, and manages to find some good friends along the way. Meg is strong, resilient, and brave, but is still naive and makes mistakes since she isn’t fully aware of the world outside of Shiprock. I really liked Hope’s character- she’s not afraid to do what has to be done to survive, but also tries to keep things upbeat as being the ray of light throughout their little group. Katie created a dystopian world that could become a reality where women are scarce and abused, people don’t think twice to betray or kill you, and everyone only thinks of themselves in order to survive. With the way that this book ended, I can’t wait to see what happens next and what revelations will come to light!
Brie did a great job with this narration! She managed to bring every action packed and suspense filled moment to life with her performance and felt like a perfect fit for Meg’s personality.
