Summary

Auguste Dupin, investigator extraordinaire, was the remarkable creation of Edgar Allan Poe. Written in the 1840s, Poe presented the acutely observant, shrewd but idiosyncratic character who, with his chronicler, provided the inspiration for the more famous Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Dupin Stories include the following:

  • "The Murders in the Rue Morgue"
  • "The Mystery of Marie Roget"
  • "The Purloined Letter"

    Editor reviews

Edgar Allan Poe is commonly recognized as a master of horror, but "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" represents another genre in which he excelled - in fact, it is commonly recognized as the first-ever modern detective story. This thrilling, chilling tale follows investigator C. Auguste Dupin as he inquires into the double murder of a woman and her daughter, parsing clues including an unidentifiable non-human hair discovered at the scene.

Kerry Shale’s performance of this adrenaline-pumping whodunit is well paced, his enunciation clear and his delivery even and eerie. Shale expertly plays with the tension in Poe’s spine-tingling text, keeping listeners on the hook until its exciting conclusion.
