Summary
From the beloved World Fantasy Award-winning author of Witchmark comes a sweeping, romantic new fantasy set in a world reminiscent of Regency England, where women's magic is taken from them when they marry. A sorceress must balance her desire to become the first great female magician against her duty to her family.
Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress who practices magic in secret, terrified of the day she will be locked into a marital collar that will cut off her powers to protect her unborn children. She dreams of becoming a full-fledged Magus and pursuing magic as her calling as men do, but her family has staked everything to equip her for Bargaining Season, when young men and women of means descend upon the city to negotiate the best marriages. The Clayborns are in severe debt, and only she can save them, by securing an advantageous match before their creditors come calling.
In a stroke of luck, Beatrice finds a grimoire that contains the key to becoming a Magus, but before she can purchase it, a rival sorceress swindles the book right out of her hands. Beatrice summons a spirit to help her get it back, but her new ally exacts a price: Beatrice's first kiss...with her adversary's brother, the handsome, compassionate, and fabulously wealthy Ianthe Lavan.
The more Beatrice is entangled with the Lavan siblings, the harder her decision becomes: If she casts the spell to become a Magus, she will devastate her family and lose the only man to ever see her for who she is; but if she marries - even for love - she will sacrifice her magic, her identity, and her dreams. But how can she choose just one, knowing she will forever regret the path not taken?

Bridgerton meets elevated fantasy and feminism
This was my first book by CL Polk and I'm captivated by their writing style, magic system and method of making very interesting social undertones shine in a perfectly straightforward Austenesque story. At first I thought I'd just be a silly Pride and prejudice style setting with swooning ladies, but I soon fell in love with the feminist message. It was very upperclass centric, though, and I would love to explore this world from another point of view.

I enjoyed the characters a lot
it is refreshing to find a book created out of pure imagination. Every item of ritual, of clothing, of life is so very well expressed and thought out. i found the telling of the way of this world most enjoyable.

Delightful, moving & entertaining book!
I've just discovered the wonderful Ms Polk's writing brilliance & the talented narration of Moira Quirk - what a dynamic duo! I enjoy books like these that so away from the traditional good vs evil mainstays of fantasy writing.
This book takes the enticing world of magic & underlays it as a foundation to modern struggles in our lives today - real life struggles of race, gender & socio-economic inequalities & prejudices.
I was in tears at a very poignant part in this well written & well spoken story, so much so that I found it hard to escape the agony of the main protagonist. Polk elegantly evokes thoughtfulness & consideration of several powerful emotions - pride, betrayal, love &/or devotion, selfish natures & bitter sacrifices. But, as many books do, the ending is better than imagined & not completely without some tied up but fraying strings. I really wish this was part of a longer series but absolutely understand that this story only required the one book to tell it! it's the right length & moves at a rapidly flowing pace, never dragging it's feet or giving a sense of 'rushing to the finish line'.
Thank you ladies, both, for a fantastic journey full of the romance of old fashioned intricacies set against a backdrop of modernity - I'll gladly recommend this read/listen for a very long time!
