Summary
When her cousin is slain by an unknown assassin, Ariel Behn becomes the sole heir to a family legacy: a sinister cache of manuscripts that thrusts her into the deadly center of international intrigue - and an age-old enigma that spans the centuries. Whoever assembles and interprets the cryptic clues of this ancient mystery will possess the power to control the fate of the world.
What strange powers lie hidden within the manuscripts? Splashed against a lavish backdrop that sweeps from the rise of the Roman Empire to the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Magic Circle finds one woman standing at the center of it all: Ariel Behn. As she races across continents to reveal the dark secrets buried in her family's past, she begins to unlock the chilling truth of the coming millennium....

Neville’s The Eight is infinitely better
I enjoyed The Magic Circle and didn’t find the sound effects as irritating as I normally do but then the odd piece of Native American music is fitting and the other intermittent sound effects aren’t too intrusive. I bought the hardback in 1998 as soon as it was published (and still have it) after reading and loving The Eight (sadly that hardback seems to be missing). I wish that novel would be produced in audiobook format as I would buy it as soon as it came out. Preferably in full rather than abridged which The Magic Circle must have been as the book is 554 pages and this only lasted 6 hours!
I love novels which cover different time periods and flit across the globe - the absolute best historical novels taking the reader/listener on marvellous journeys across many countries are the incomparable Dorothy Dunnett’s two Lymond and Niccolo series both on Audible with the beautiful voice of David Monteath for the Lymond chronicles and the very pleasant voice of John Banks for the Niccolo series, both excellent voice artists. Of course there are few authors as accomplished and erudite as the late Mrs Dunnett sadly but Katherine Neville writes well and takes the audience on a marvellous journey.

I found the presentation of this to be distracting and irritating. it did not enhance the book in any way.

the music is unnecessary
love the story, but the ambient music at the start of some parts is something unnecessary. didn't like that.

An enjoyable listen but
I read this story years ago, love the way Katherine Neville weaves history and fable together. I found this narration on audible while looking for The Eight which is one of my favourite books, sadly it is not here, so I chose this one. I would say like others the music is irritating.
