About this listen

From Lucinda Riley, the beloved author of the Seven Sisters series, The Love Letter is a thrilling novel full of secrets, lies and unforgettable twists.

'Travel back to 90s London with this expose of dark secrets . . . twists galore' – Best Magazine

Keeping secrets is a dangerous game . . .

1995, London. Sir James Harrison was one of the greatest actors of his generation. But, when he passes away, he leaves behind more than just a heartbroken family. He leaves a secret so shocking, so devastating that it could rock the English establishment to its very core . . .

Joanna Haslam is an ambitious young journalist, assigned to cover the legendary actor’s funeral. The great and the good of the celebrity world are there. But Joanna stumbles on something dark beneath the glamour: the mention of a letter Sir James left behind, the contents of which have been desperately concealed for over seventy years.

As Joanna peels back the veil of lies that has shrouded this secret, she realizes that there are other forces at work – forces that would prevent her from discovering the truth. And they’ll stop at nothing to reach the letter before she does . . .

This title was originally published as Seeing Double. It is available in the US as The Royal Secret.

Too many "endings"!

I really enjoyed this book until the first "ending". The story was interesting, with a good build-up and you definitely felt empathy for the various figures involved. I was about to turn off before the final credits started playing, only to see there was another 4 hours of playtime left!

I continued on, through an increasingly tedious and drawn-out section. I wonder if the author was asked to make the book longer, but it started to rival one of Dumbledore's famously drawn-out storylines. On and on we went, slowly piecing together what was already obvious the first time around to the 2nd ending. Then another chapter and, I suppose you could call it a plot-twist, but it just felt like another purposeless piece to a 3rd ending. Then it started up again only to finish on what I suppose the author felt was a "cliff-hanger", but I was just glad that I could finally finish the book.

Great narrating, but if I listened again, I'd stop at the first ending. Would I order another book by the author? Not sure... It would depend how long it was!

Intrigue

Story was spoilt by actors trying Scottish Nd Irish and posh accents. Would have been more enjoyable just read.
