Not sure of this.
Not sure that I liked this book. I don't know why. I preferred another book by this author that I listened to. Found it a bit odd. But listened all way through. Didn't quite engage with the characters, and the plot seemed slightly strange..but wasn't bored by it .

An unusual and compelling reading
There's a lot going on in this book and some dark undercurrents interlacing with some of the more traditional themes of family relationships.
The author has an obvious love for this area of France and that shines through her descriptions. She's also not afraid about writing about characters that defy convention and avoid stereotypes, and she explores different kinds of romantic and family andrelationships that are realistic and convincing. I find myself really caring about these people and invested in their lives.
I was surprised to discover that some reviewers thought the book was boring - I found it quite the opposite. For me there was plenty of mystery, connections with ancient and recent history and Douglas's trademark hints of the supernatural.
The ending was unusual and enjoyable. No spoilers here, but it offers a mixture of 'Ah, so that's why things happened' moments but also some intriguing threads to keep the reader thinking after the final page.

Not as good as her others.
Really struggled with this one. the Notebook seemed hardly mentioned for most of the book, then it all tied up at the end. Still enjoyed it mind you. Liked the characters. Thought it a strange ending.

The lost plot
Family story meets murder mystery but neither is particularly successful. The " heroine " pootles about being rather serious and miserable . The murders are explained right at the end and don't really run as a thread through the story . I did ask myself at one point what had happened to the plot..it was very thin .For me it didn't work and there was little mystery and no suspense . Characters were rather one dimensional and Mila comes across as dull, drippy and lacking in personality. The narrator pronounced French words well but the narration was rather flat.
The descriptions in the story have made me want to go back to Brittany .
Not a bad read for a holiday but nothing gripping or terribly engaging .
