Summary

A stand-alone novel set in the Ark Royal Universe!

The first major alien offensive against Earth has been blunted, winning humanity time to deploy new weapons and prepare new tactics as Earth's space navies prepare to take the offensive. But the enigmatic aliens have plans of their own - a full-scale attack on Earth that will either win the war in a single stroke or lose it.

The stakes have never been so high. The fate of humanity itself is in the balance. And, as battle rages across the solar system, as humanity finds its back pushed firmly against the wall, millions of people - military and civilian - struggle for survival, knowing that victory will come with a very high price....

And defeat will be the end of everything humanity holds dear.

Good background to the chain

Whilst the Ark Royal series have been, on the whole, a good story arc. This background filler doesn’t really add much other than a bit of clarification.

Solid story

Solid story, very enjoyable.
A bit racy at times; not sure that level of detail is strictly necessary for the story, but otherwise quite good.

mediocre.. not the best in the series

a pretty big standard post apocalyptic story done to death. And imo a weaker story compared to the others

Good story.

Good story and fills in quite a few holes in backstories too. Narration clear with good tempo and reasonable characterisation.

OK but not necessary. Slightly unsettling

What did you like most about The Longest Day?

Closes off some questions from the first trilogy. If you want to know more about Molly Schneider or how the Russians made their plans, the answers are contained here-in.

Would you recommend The Longest Day to your friends? Why or why not?

I'm not sure. Whilst it's part of the story of the Ark Royal trilogy, I was already happy with the Ark Royal story. This details what happened on earth during the attack. I don't think I'd listen again. There are some details of sexual assault that were more graphic than anything in the previous books and I didn't really need that.

What does Ralph Lister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I like him, these stories are read well by him and if you're looking at this book you're probably already familiar with him. I love R.C. Bray but I think on these books Lister is a better choice, as there's mainly told from a British point of view and I'm not sure Bray could do it that way.
