Summary
It's 2070-71. Nearly six decades after Step Day, and in the Long Earth the new Next posthuman society continues to evolve. For Joshua Valienté, now in his late 60s, it is time to take one last solo journey into the High Meggers: an adventure that turns into a disaster. Alone and facing death, his only hope of salvation lies with a group of trolls.
But as Joshua confronts his mortality, the Long Earth receives a signal from the stars. A signal that is picked up by radio astronomers but also in more abstract ways - by the trolls and by the Great Traversers. Its message is simple, but its implications are enormous: Join us. The supersmart Next realise that the Message contains instructions on how to develop an immense artificial intelligence, but to build it they have to seek help from throughout the industrious worlds of mankind. Bit by bit, byte by byte, they assemble a computer the size of a continent - a device that will alter the Long Earth's place within the cosmos and reveal the ultimate, life-affirming goal of those who sent the Message. Its impact will be felt by and resonate with all - mankind and other species, young and old, communities and individuals - who inhabit the Long Earth....

A fitting end
A lot of the time it feels like 2 books and the ultimate conclusion feels a little rushed and flat, almost as of Stephen Baxter just wanted to finish it and move on.
Still, a thoroughly enjoyable romp, full of the imagination and wit that has made this series such a wonderful and sadly unrepeatable collaboration.
In terms of performance, I would have preferred it without the accents.

Loved it. Brilliant reading excellen vocalisation
The story has a preoccupation with repeating the back history as if for a reader with a short memory but it is well written.

this last book make sense of the series
What made the experience of listening to The Long Cosmos the most enjoyable?
A tying up of the concept and a rounding out of the characters, a feasible conclusion.

A fitting finale to a cosmic caper
Ties up the loose ends nicely, while providing an interesting extension of the storyline. While it borrowed heavily from many sci-fi classics, it also pays homage to Discworld characters, albeit in a slightly tongue in cheek way.

Flawed but irresistible story
There are a lot of flaws and plotholes to the whole Long Earth series but theres something irresistible about the concept. Mix in some unmistakably Terry Pratchett nuances and engaging characters and it's a winner. Wouldn't say this was the best of the series, but a great end to the saga.
