Summary

Including conversations with God.

To listen to The Little World of Don Camillo is to travel to the valley of the River Po, Italy's widest and most fertile plain, with its unique atmosphere, culture, and natural history. It is to do so in the incomparable company of a cast of fictional characters who testify to the exquisite humor and humanity of their creator.

In the Little World, eternal forces grapple with the absurd drama of everyday life, and hilarious and unearthly things can happen.

If you keep this in mind, you will have no difficulty in getting to know the hotheaded village priest, Don Camillo, and the equally pugnacious Communist mayor, Peppone. Nor will you be surprised when a third person watches the goings-on from a big cross in the village church, and not infrequently intercedes....

In story after story, Don Camillo and Peppone confront each other, sometimes in a serious and violent manner. But when the priest unburdens himself in the village church, a voice from above the high altar responds, and Don Camillo’s conversations with God begin.

Shrewd, insightful, compassionate, and gently humorous, the good Lord leads the stubborn priest to discover the inner man beneath the politics and prejudice so that eventually, and to the great benefit of the local community, he and Peppone can, however begrudgingly, develop respect for one another.

It is then we see the ideas and values of Don Camillo's little world are true for all times, the world over....

In this new, authorized edition of Giovanni Guareschi's enchanting classic, 19 stories never before translated into English are published for the first time. The Little World of Don Camillo has been enjoyed by millions of folk from 10 to 100, not only as a book, but on film, TV, and radio, and now as an audiobook.

Critic reviews

"You'll find Don Camillo not just enchanting and lovable, and at times hilariously funny, but also strangely moving in his simple but certain faith." (BBC Radio, Books by the Fire)

A meaningful read

There are a number of good reasons for listening to these Don Camillo stories. They are well written, they are funny but what is more interesting is that the theology they teach perhaps gives much more meaning than is taught by recognised theologians. This might be hinted at by the invitation given in 1959 by Pope John XXXIII to Guareschi, the author of the stories, to help rewrite the catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, an invitation that he, regrettably, declined.

Timeless

i first read this book years ago while at school. it has a timeless quality which captures the area of the Po delta in Italy during the 1950s. a simple and at times funny read.

Not to my taste.

I think that my taste may have changed over the years or perhaps the voices and pictures in my head where better. This is always a danger.

Pure entertainment

Was so pleased to see this available on audible, thoroughly enjoyed the BBC radio productions of some of the stories in the past, and while this doesn't have the benefit of that excellent cast and dramatization, it is a wonderful performance of these amusing short stories. I only wish more were available.

A delightful story on a serious subject.

Fascinating insight into post war Italy. It is written with a droll sense of humour with unexpected twists in the stories.

Beautiful!

There have been a number of dramatisations of The Little World of Dom Camillo over the years - some better than others - but I found this audiobook the most pleasurable version that I’ve had the privilege of listening to. Piers Dudgeon, with excellent narrative style, timing and nuanced delivery brings the original stories of Giovanni Guareschi alive. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Not as good as I hoped

I love the Don Camillo books. This translation lacks the humour of the earlier translation that I am used to. Coupled with the somewhat deadpan delivery of the narrator the book reads like a factual history. There is an opportunity here to bring these wonderful stories to life if only a different narrator could be used.

Don Camillo

Years ago my Mother introduced me to Don Camillo. What a joy to find it on Audible and return to the Po valley and listen to those stories again .
