About this listen

In the annals of piracy, few figures are as enigmatic and controversial as Captain William Kidd. His journey from a reputable seaman to one of the most infamous pirates encapsulates the blurred lines and moral ambiguities of 17th-century piracy and privateering. But he also lived through seismic times in the history of England, Scotland, the Caribbean and of the Americas, especially New York. It's an incredible journey, scuppered by those in high places with wealth and power that all began with maritime tradition dating before Julius Caesar.

But, in 1696, it's Kidd's maritime career that takes a decisive turn. He was entrusted with the command of the Adventure Galley. His task was to hunt down pirates and French vessels in the Indian Ocean, a region notorious for piracy. This mission, sponsored by some of the most powerful men in England, and New York, seemed to be a golden opportunity but it all goes horribly wrong.

Captain Kidd's legacy, a mixture of vilification and romanticisation, also begs the question, was his execution legal and was he innocent of the crimes as charged. Is the treasure still out there?

In this book, we cover each of the charges, and show that Captain Kidd was not a pirate, nor a murderer but a man who tried his best to serve his King and country only to be punished by the very same men who professed to support him.

Very interesting!

This book offers a riveting exploration into the life and legend of Captain William Kidd, a figure shrouded in mystery and controversy. With a keen eye on the turbulent backdrop of 17th-century maritime politics and social dynamics,

The author masterfully presents Kidd not as the notorious pirate history often labels him, but as a dedicated seaman caught in the machinations of the powerful. The narrative is engaging, shedding light on Kidd's efforts to serve his king and country, only to be betrayed. It raises questions about the fairness of his trial and his subsequent legacy.

This thought-provoking account deserves a broader audience, perhaps even adaptation into a film.

Enthralling, Tremendously Engaging!

In this beautifully produced audiobook, Noel Young reveals the spellbinding and controversial story of Captain William Kidd, one of the most famous pirate hunters of all time.

Charged in 1696 with hunting down pirates in the Indian Ocean and sponsored by wealthy, powerful men in New York and England, Captain Kidd was betrayed by his sponsors and ruthlessly executed - was he a corrupt pirate himself or a wrongly punished hero? Young's history makes a compelling case for the former. Highly Recommend!

Uncover the truth behind the legend!

Captain Kidd - hero or villain? This book takes you on a thrilling journey to uncover the truth behind the legend. It dives into Kidd's life, from his early days as a sailor to his controversial turn as a captain. The story explores the murky waters of piracy and politics in the 17th century Caribbean. It made me think about my own family history. My grandpa always told stories about our ancestors who sailed those very waters. Maybe they even crossed paths with Captain Kidd himself! It makes history feel so much more real.
