Summary
The Law and the Lady by Wilkie Collins
A full-cast production by The Online Stage.
Just days after the wedding of Valeria Brinton and Eustace Woodville, a series of strange incidents causes Valeria to believe her husband is hiding a dark secret. She discovers he has been living under a false name, and when questioned, Eustace refuses to discuss it. Upon further digging, Valeria finds Eustace had been on trial three years ago for the murder of his wife. However, the verdict had come down as the scotch verdict of not proven. This implied his guilt, but there was not enough evidence for a conviction nor did it exonerate him. Desperate to prove Eustace is innocent and to restore their newlywed bliss, Valeria stands strong in the face of adversity, meeting a very strange man named Miserrimus Dexter, who will be paramount in uncovering the truth.

Immensely irritating production
Had the main narrator been better I might have found the whole thing less frustrating to listen to, but I just kept wishing one of the livelier voices would take over and read for her. A shame, as it’s a good novel.

A great listen. Fabulous plot and characters
The story is told from the perspective of the main character Valeria Brinton and she is a feisty, determined character, undeterred by the pleadings and instructions of family and friends. She herself frequently refers to her own ‘obstinacy’. It is this obstinacy or grit, that powers the story and propels the plot forward. It also makes her a strong, female character that strikes a chord today. Is it obstinacy or the courage to fight for what you believe in? The other characters include the husband (Eustace Woodville), the object of suspicion, the difficult mother in law (Mrs Woodville), the dry, Scottish lawyer, the kind oldest friend and the mysterious and mad Miserimus Dexter. These are all played with distinctive and ‘on the button’ voices and the drama races along, each chapter dealing with and disposing of another obstacle.
The book is fictional and the narrative is first person and linear. The unfolding of the plot and the gradual revealing of the whole story keeps the reader guessing and the book captures beautifully the interaction between character and plot.

fantastic story, very dodgy accents!
another fantastic story by Wilkie Collins but I nearly gave up listening as the main character Valeria, who narrates most of it, has an accent that sounds occasionally Irish or American, or artificial like my Satnav, putting emphasis in odd places and doesn't link words so that they make sense.

Unlistenable
I tried really hard to engage with this for the sake of the story. Unfortunately, it was so badly read, I gave up a quarter of the way through. Hugely disappointing.
I was obliged to rate the story in order to submit this review, but it is based purely upon the small part I listened to.

One of my favourite books ruined by dreadful accents
I was sceptical beforehand on hearing the sample and reading other reviews. Only because it was one of my favourite books, and there are no other audiobooks versions of it available, did I continue to listen to it. The narrator of the main character sounded like a child putting on a grown up voice and there were numerous mispronunciations. Some of the other accents were so bad it would’ve been comical if it hadn’t been so disappointing.
