Summary

When Rachel Cusk decides to travel to Italy for a summer with her husband and two young children, she has no idea of the trials and wonders that lie in store. Their journey leads them to both the expected and the surprising, all seen through Cusk's sharp and humane perspective.

Travel log?

What was all that about? Not the Rachel I know and love. Is it a journal of a peri-midlifer on the road showing herself up as an Anglofile (after all) who is basically allergic to Europe? A wild goose chase for...? A run up to a family meltdown (not that they get much more than an occasional mention)? The trouble of travelling with dietary antipathies? Are we left with any impression of Italy at all? Or is the message: stay home!?
