About this listen

“Mark Sullivan has done it again! The Last Green Valley is a compelling and inspiring story of heroism and courage in the dark days at the end of World War II.” --Kristin Hannah, number one New York Times best-selling author

From the author of the number one best seller Beneath a Scarlet Sky comes a new historical novel inspired by one family’s incredible story of daring, survival, and triumph.

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans?

The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin’s horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom.

Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels’ story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family’s incredible will to survive and see their dreams realized.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Will Damron shows his vocal range in this work of historical fiction, set in Ukraine during WWII. The cast is large, giving Damron ample opportunity to use his expertise in differentiating characters.… He smoothly slips from the third-person narrator to a variety of voices and accents, making listeners feel present as the dramatic events unfold.” AudioFile Magazine

Loved it

So much unknown history revealed. I was captivated by this story, especially as it was based on the lives of a real family. I didn’t have a lot of knowledge of the society side of WW2 & its aftermath. Definitely worth a read.

Brilliant, An important book

Wonderful narration, easy voice to listen to.
This book is profound.
It’s devastating to read the historical details from the German perspective for a change.
Many Germans suffered horrifically in WW2
I didn’t know a lot about this.
It’s a story of hope too though, of resilience in the face of the absolute worst of situations and how it’s possible to live after suffering so much.
Beautifully written.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC

WOW, I have over 1000 audible books in my library and this book ranks in the top five. It is beautifully written and although very sad in parts it is written with so much compassion it makes it bearable to read. I cannot believe this all happened to many people, in particular to this families story. The courage and strength but also the moral convictions that they stood by against such oppression leaves me in complete awe of this and many other families that have lived through war. I think every single human being on this planet should read this book. The narrator did an outstanding job as well so well done to him. please please read this book I guarantee you will love it.

A long read but very insightful

Felt a bit slow paced at times and a bit longer than it needed to be but, in hindsight, there weren’t really bits that could have been omitted. Will definitely look for this author again

Amazingly brilliant book

I learned so much from this brilliantly written, and spoken book about what sadly happened to so so many people after the war had ended. The inspiration and belief in family and survival is at the heart of this story. Adeline quote, “I used to think life was something that happens too me, but now I know life happened for me” is one I will carry with me. It’s a long book but I couldn’t get enough, one I would certainly recommends
