Summary
Living on her family’s gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, clever, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented 14-year-old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure....
One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their broken hearts.
Nearly 60 years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now 80 years old and living in London. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbours a suspicion as to the culprit.
Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate - now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone...yet more present than ever.
A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is spellbinding and satisfying.

What is that accent thing all about?!
I'm still listening, and really enjoying the story, but the accents are bizarre, to say the least! The attempt at a Cornish accent is in fact more like some sort of Scottish/Irish pirate mash up!
There is also some weird mockney in their too - dropping Ts randomly appears to be the general approach there.
I've listened to a few audio books narrated by this woman, and they're great, but those required her native Australian accent.
This is torture, and it's really detracting from the story for me.

Excellent story but dreadful narration!
I've listened as far as chapter 15 and will continue because the story is gripping. The narration however is dreadful and almost putting me off finishing the book. Why choose someone with an Antipodean twang to narrate a book that is set in England? The regional accents are way off and I'm finding some of the pronunciation irritating as well, especially a couple of the character's names. Better to read it yourself I'd say !

Offensively terrible reader for a good book
Would you listen to The Lake House again? Why?
No as the reader was horrific - Australian acent mocking Cornish accents made me feel actually offended as a Cornish listener. Would she be able to parody another nationality like that?
How could the performance have been better?
Better reader. Set in England with English characters. Australian reader is the wrong choice
Any additional comments?
A bit cliched and surprisingly simplified coincidences at the end but a good story generally

the narrator really didn't help this
The book is long and involved and s-l-o-w - which I can just about forgive because that is sometimes the joy of book, although details such as being to read a very old document on a desk some way off through a dirty window did stretch my credulity but what really rankled was the narrator - she can't do accents and she certainly can't do Cornish - which would be fine if she just read the book in her very pleasant and engaging ordinary tone - but she does try and it is doesn't work .

Great story line
Great read and story and loved the ending but found the narrator and her Aussie accent quite off putting, especially when trying to switch to a cockney.

Entertaining but a little predictable
Not a bad plot and certainly kept me entertained but I think the book would have been better for being a bit shorter with a few less twists and turns (some of which were quite predictabl). Very odd choice of narrator! I appreciate the author is Australian but as the book is set in England an English narrator would have been more appropriate in my opinion. I've listened to books by this narrator before set in Australia and enjoyed them but I found her dreadful attempts at regional English accents very offputtting and it really spoiled the audio book for me.

Story spoiled by terrible accent
I found it hard going because of the narrator’s insistence of attempting all the accents .... badly! I will be avoiding anything else performed by her.

Brilliant
I loved, loved, loved this book.
Such great characters, I liked the way we saw them in different parts of their lives and they all wove beautifully together.

Good but predictable
This is very similar to a lot of Kates books and I had guessed the ending quite a few chapters before the end. It was alright but it didn't have me gripped like a few of her book had. Narration was good and not confusing. I probably wouldn't listen again

Twists and turns all the way
At the beginning it took a while to get used to the jumping of each character and at a different time in there life. I also thought I knew who done it then changed my mind then changed my mind again so many twists and turns the book kept me enthralled to the end.
