About this listen

In The Killer Across the Table, legendary FBI criminal profiler and number one bestselling author John Douglas delves deep into the lives and crimes of four of the most disturbing and complex predatory killers he’s encountered, offering never-before-revealed details about his profiling process and divulging the strategies used to crack some of his most challenging cases.

Former Special Agent John Douglas has sat across the table from many of the world’s most notorious killers – including Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, ‘Coed Killer’ Edmund Kemper, ‘Son of Sam Killer’ David Berkowitz and ‘BTK Strangler’ Dennis Rader, and has also been instrumental in the exoneration of Amanda Knox and the West Memphis Three. He has gone on to become a legend in the world of criminal investigative analysis, and his work has inspired TV shows and films such as Mindhunter, Criminal Minds and The Silence of the Lambs.

In this riveting work of true crime, Douglas spotlights four very different criminals he’s confronted over the course of his career, and explains how they helped him to put together the puzzle of how psychopaths and predators think. Taking us inside the interrogation room and demonstrating the unique techniques he uses to understand the workings of the most terrifying and incomprehensible minds, The Killer Across the Table is an unputdownable journey into the darkest reaches of criminal profiling and behavioural science from a man who knows serial killers better than anyone else. As Douglas says:

‘If you want to understand the artist, look at his art.’

If you want to understand what makes a murderer, start here.

Terrifyingly Excellent

This is not an easy listen obviously given the nature of the subject there are details of some heinous crimes. What was very interesting was the break down of the perpetrator, the analysis of the crime, and the conclusions that Douglas comes to for each one.

I was surprised at the differences between each if the subjects under consideration, the stereotype of the "serial killer" that we get from Hollywood is not accurate across the board. The different motivation, modus operandi, reaction and accountability is fascinating.

I will definitely be looking out for more by these authors, and it was brilliant that the audiobook is read by the actor who plays "the author" in the Mindhunter series. He does an excellent job with the reading, and hits the tone perfectly. I really enjoyed the interview between Jonathan and Douglas at the end also and would have been happy to listen to more.

Fascinating ..

Jonathan Groff has a really wonderful voice and reads these accounts so well , I had to check he wasn't the author! Fascinating dive into the mindsets and back stories of 4 very different American murder cases, taking apart the individual histories of the killers , their motivations and psychological profiles by one the men who initiated the programme of profiling for the FBI. The stories are of course grim and do sometimes involve child victims. There is however no gratuitous detail beyond what is necessary to paint these pictures.

Superb

This is a terrific audiobook that is perfectly narrated. Though the subject matter is not pleasant it’s fascinating as to why people cross the line of normality. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in true crime.

Fascinating.

A great deep dive into the mind of various violent offenders and their reasoning for each crimes. Douglas has done an incredible job at sharing some of his long career at the FBI and the narrator’s voice is an absolute pleasure to listen to. The small interview of the author in the end is a great bonus. Recommended!
