Summary
Winner of the CWA Dagger in the Library Award, 2004.
"Ex-CID. Ex-New York. Ex-cellent" reads the sign outside the Satisfaction Guarantee Detective Agency. Cephas Buthelezi certainly talks the talk, Precious discovers, but would he have the wherewithal to deal with her current case, a man who has been attacked by ostrich rustlers and is eager to reassess his life?
Meanwhile, there are difficulties at the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, where one of the apprentices has discovered the Lord; problems at home with the mysterious death of a hoopoe; and romantic complications when Mma Makutsi sets up a typing school for men.
Critic reviews
"McCall Smith is a careful, emblematic writer who is beyond gifted, he is a natural storyteller. McCall Smith has once again charmed the sarongs off us." ( The List)

Slower pace than usual, but equally enjoyable
Now that Mma Ramotswe has moved her agency into "Speedy Motors", she can save more money and her assistant Mma Makutsi can balance her presence at the car shop as well as in her office. However, a new and very dubious detective agency has opened and the No. 1 ladies detective agency didn't need the extra stress of losing clients.
It took me longer to read this book because I felt it started slower but then the expected pace came and it was another enjoyable book. I particularly enjoy the series' narrator (Adjoa Andoh) and how calm and relax I am at listening to the wonderful and careful sentences that Alexander McCall Smith writes. These books are perfect to unwind at the end of the day.

comfort for the soul
Listening to these stories is such a comfort for me. I love the voices Adjoa uses, really brings the characters to life, and the stories are just little bites of happiness. Just curl up with a hot drink and relax.

A very pleasant read
As usual, the brevity of the book grieves me, but yet again, a heartwarming reminder that life is not all about western politics and big city values.

I Can't Love These Books More!
Just finished for the 4th, maybe 5th time. It has been so lovely to listen to the latest adventure and dastardly shenanigans of the Jabarone natives as Mma Ramotswe gracefully solves multiple issues. I wish the BBC series is redirected. The world needs this genteel, beautiful escape. Adjoa Andoh, you are just incredible. Thank you ❤️🙏
