About this listen

James Halldon wakes up in a strange and dark place, surrounded by endless junk and debris.

He has no idea where he is, or how he got there. No food. No water. No light. Almost no memories of his past.

And there are things moving in the darkness around him. Things that growl. And daytime never seems to come.

Very unusual story that grips you from the outset

I can virtually guarantee that you will never have encountered as odd a story as this. I couldn't put it down, because the setting was so peculiar, and because I had no idea what was happening. This may not sound like much of a recommendation, but trust me - it's addictive!

I have read all three volumes of the trilogy on my Kindle, so I was interested to find out how they would work as audiobooks. The answer is, very well - with a couple of reservations. I was surprised to hear an American reader, because the narrator clearly appears to be English (English slang, referencing UK TV shows, Guy Fawkes etc). The reader also puts rather odd stresses on words and sentences at times. However, he does a very good job of giving the characters different voices, and I enjoyed his performance overall.

Do give this a try. You may never have heard of the writer, but don't let that put you off. If you like inventive, speculative fiction with a dystopian twist, this is one you'll love.

I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author, but this is an unbiased review.
