Summary

While holidaying in Italy, Angela Marchmont is persuaded to postpone her trip to Venice and go to Stresa instead, to investigate a pair of spiritualists who are suspected of defrauding some of the town’s English residents out of their money. But what starts out as a minor matter swiftly becomes more serious when one of the residents in question is found dead in the beautiful gardens of his home, having apparently committed suicide.

Seduced by the heady sights and scents of the Italian lakes and distracted by an unexpected encounter with an old adversary who seems bent on provoking her, Angela sets out to find out the truth of the affair and resume her journey to Venice before she forgets herself and loses her head...and her heart.

Romance and Intrigue in Italy

I love all Clara Benson's books and am delighted that they are now available as audiobooks. Elizabeth Klett has done a superb job of giving Angela Marchmont a voice and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the ins and outs of the plot, even though I have read it before. Clara Benson produces a souffle of a story which, unlike the edible variety, remains as light and fresh as when it was first produced. Perfect for those of us who prefer our corpses to be (more or less) bloodless and with a hint of humour in the mix. Highly recommended.

Easy listening with a good story

Nice easy book to listen too. Liked the story as it sets up the next book.

She said, he said

How could any proof reader or publicist not correct her massive, unnecessary over use of *she said, he said*. It ruined the book. Also why didn’t the narrator miss out a few. The story was good. Very M M Kaye in style and content.
