Summary
The groundbreaking first novel in the bestselling Joona Linna thriller series.
A TRAUMATISED WITNESS
Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm. Detective Inspector Joona Linna is faced with a boy who witnessed the gruesome murder of his family. He’s suffered more than one hundred knife wounds and is comatose with shock.
A DISGRACED DETECTIVE
Linna’s running out of time. The police do not want him on the case. The killer’s on the run and there are seemingly no clues. Desperate for information, Linna enlists specialist Dr Erik Maria Bark, a hypnotist who vowed never to practise again.
A DEVASTATING CASE
As the hypnosis begins, a long and terrifying chain of events unfurls with reverberations far beyond Linna’s case.
Praise for Lars Kepler:
‘The thriller that’s taking Europe by storm…ferocious, visceral storytelling that wraps you in a cloak of darkness. It’s stunning.’ Daily Mail
‘One of the best – if not the best – Scandinavian crime thrillers I’ve read.’ Red
‘All the hallmarks of a classic… this is crime writing at its most devilishly involving.’ Marie Claire
‘A genuine chiller…commanding and deeply scarifying stuff.’ Independent
‘Riddled with irresistible, nail-biting suspense, this first-class Scandinavian thriller is one of the best I’ve ever read.’ Australian Women’s Weekly
‘A rollercoaster ride of a thriller full of striking twists.’ Mail on Sunday
‘An horrific and original read.’ The Sun
‘a sulphurous whiff of Hannibal Lecter.’ Financial Times

Keep Going with Series
What did you like most about The Hypnotist?
The story was well constructed, it slowly pulled you in, there is a nice level of complexity to the story
What other book might you compare The Hypnotist to, and why?
if you like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Harry Hole you will like this, it is a tried and tested formula. However, the lead character does not have the personality or depth as other characters such as Harry Hole etc.
Would you be willing to try another one of Eamonn Riley’s performances?

Great story in Steig Larsson mould
The story is very dark and touches on difficulty situations, it has twists and reveals all the way through. It starts so simply you think you know where it is going. Can't wait for the next book. Can't recommend highly enough. Finally a Millenium Series heir.

The hypnotist
Not a bad story, quite a bit far fetched at some points, but 17h, far, far too long. I also struggled with the narrator’s voice and accent.

a good thriller. Worth sticking with.
it is written like it is present tense, and that was hard to get used to. I wasn't sure I would get through it, in the end I am glad I persevered. There also strange uses of time in the narrative early on but I think they realised it was irritating and stopped.
The hero Jonah is quirky and fun, and there is even a love interest.
The hypnotist part and the therapy group is a bit long winded but pays off in the end. All in all a thoroughly good romp. I would say that it is pretty gruesome and not a book for the faint hearted. Anyway I hope this helps. I will definitely get the next one in the series.

First Lars Kepler and not my last!!
A good mixture of past and present intermingled well to keep you guessing. The madness of the group as individuals was clever throwing you off the scent. And with the popularity of Pokeman at the moment - an interesting historical perspective from the Pokeman first-timers.
I'm at the bottom of the ocean breathing bubbles...

Far too long
The overall premise of the novel is good but it’s too long. The various twists and turns of the story eventually became tedious. Joona Linna’s role in the story seems tangential. Not sure if I’ll be trying the next one in the series.

An interesting story worth listening to.
Joona Linna is put in charge of a gruesome murder of a mother and her child. The only survivor at the scene, a teenage son, is taken to hospital where the senior doctor suggest that Joona asks a skilled hypnotist to help unlock the boys mind and memories. This leads to a number of complications and personal dilemmas for the main characters.
The first book in a series. I will be listening to the next.
