Summary

Born on Christmas Eve, Arthur Pendragon is the illegitimate son of the married duchess Ygraine and Uther Pendragon, brother of a great king: a union Merlin arranged. But Arthur's birth is not welcomed by everyone: his father demands he be hidden until a legitimate son can be born, and Merlin is forced to give the babe to his own childhood nurse for safekeeping and go into hiding.

In a dream, Merlin learns of a sword of unparalleled beauty and extraordinary craftsmanship, hidden in a long-deserted Roman temple. Merlin retrieves the sword and hides it in a cave on an island in the centre of a lake, where it remains for years.

But what is hidden must be revealed. For it is foretold that the irrepressible young man named Arthur will find a sword and claim his birthright: as heir to Uther Pendragon and king of the Britons.

superb reimagineing

A fantastic middle segment of the Merlin trilogy. well read with great characterisation. Covering the early years of Arthur's childhood to his coronation, this feels real despite the magic which could in many instances be seen as being medicine, engineering or other modern sciences.

God Arthurian Story

An enjoyable tale of how Arthur became high king told through the voice of Merlin the kingmaker. As with all Arthururian books much is legend which gives the author a good deal of licence to make for a compelling story. With this version it was a little long winded and whilst the romanised place names gave it authenticity, it made it difficult to know where in the country events took place.

Arthurian legend retold

Wondering retelling of the classic Arturian legend, through the eyes of Merlin. An excellent rendition and performance.

Brilliant !

This series just goes from strength to strength. It is extremely well written, researched and imbued with magic and wonderful development.
The whole novel is brought to life by a first class narrator.
A total joy to listen to.

I love this narration of these stories.

I read the trilogy as a youngster and have remembered it ever since so was delighted to find these first class audiobooks. The narrator does an excellent job of keeping it interesting.

I remembered enjoying The Crystal Cave most as a coming of age story but this quest story is also very enjoyable. Merlin is a fascinating and likeable character but I missed Ambrosius and Arthur is not (yet?) as clearly delineated.

Beautifully written

There is an older recording by a narrator whose voice I preferred, but this reading is still good.

Arturus Superbus

A terrific story, beautifully told by an expert in her craft. Sheds new light on the greatest British legend. Wonderfully, sensitively performed by someone who truly embraces the spirit of this novel and thus moving tale.
