Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The thought-provoking must-listen Richard & Judy book club pick.

You should never judge how someone chooses to raise their child.

Elizabeth and Bryony are polar opposites but their unexpected friendship has always worked. They're the best of friends, and godmothers to each other's daughters - because they trust that the safety of their children is both of their top priority.

But what if their choice could harm your own child?

Little do they know that they differ radically over one very important issue. And when Bryony, afraid of being judged, tells what is supposed to be a harmless white lie before a child's birthday party, the consequences are more catastrophic than either of them could ever have imagined . . .

'Really beautifully written, compassionately told and incredibly thought provoking. A truly immersive telling of both sides of a story' Susan Lewis, Sunday Times bestselling author

'Gripping, thought-provoking, moving and oh-so-topical, THE HERD tackles the most divisive parenting issue of our age with skill and compassion. Fans of Jodi Picoult will DEVOUR it' Tammy Cohen

Wow, so many a dilemma

This book was chosen for our book club. At first I wasn’t sure but then couldn’t stop listening. Loved it and I felt both sides within my heart.

Inconsistent

Not the greatest narrative performance- a lot of the characters are the same. Didn’t find this particularly thrilling. The courtroom scenes were stronger in the second half. Not for me.

Hard to engage with the characters.

At first, I was very sorry I’d chosen to listen to this. The early chapters were pedestrian drivel.
Half way through I became engaged by the plot but I still felt it lacked a sense of truth. Best friends for twenty years & no meaningful discussion about vaccination or parenting or freedom of choice? A superficial friendship it seems.
The plot was interesting but it was far too long drawn out, and the characters were unlikable.
If this reflects the world we live in then it’s a very sorry place.

Interesting topic

Enjoyed listening to the story, liked the topic, found some of the characters frustrating and voices used a bit too similar. The ending in court was unrealistic.

Thought provoking and gripping

A gripping, thought provoking story which finished with an unexpected but satisfying ending. Performed with excellent variation of tone for the different characters.

Excellent

Early in the book, I nearly stopped listening as I thought it was anti-vaccine propaganda, but I stuck with it and it gave a balanced view.
Really well written and narrated. Loved it.

Wonderful story

What a great book club book! So much to discuss. Loved every minute even though or maybe because it raises so many questions. I worked out how it would end, but still enjoyed it.
Looking forward to seeing my book club ladies to find out what they thought.

Surprising.

I wasn't sure I would like this novel, having judged the characters before getting to " "know them properly" It was, however, a rather good story. Pleasantly surprised.

Interesting but not very enjoyable!

I found the book interesting as it covered some controversial topics but wasn’t an enjoyable read overall … I wonder if it was still biased

Brilliant!

A very different story to the usual and very compelling. Has you switching sides constantly.

Well narrated. So well narrated you don’t even notice the narrator.

A real thought provoker
