Summary

Robin knew Paul wasn’t perfect. But he said they were so lucky to have found each other, and she believed it was true.

In the heady strangeness of Morocco, he is everything she wants him to be - passionate, talented, knowledgeable. She is convinced that it is here she will finally become pregnant.

But when Paul suddenly disappears, and Robin finds herself the prime suspect in the police inquiry, everything changes.

As her understanding of the truth starts to unravel, Robin lurches from the crumbling art deco of Casablanca to the daunting Sahara, caught in an increasingly terrifying spiral from which there is no easy escape.

With his acclaimed ability to write page-turners that also make you think, Douglas Kennedy takes the reader on a roller-coaster journey into a heart of darkness that asks the question: what would you do if your life depended on it?

exciting tale of loss and courage

I loved it and was amazed with the action that kept me up late into the night. Kennedy never disappoints.

disappointing

Annoying narration with awful French pronunciation. blooper also locates Casablanca on Africa's east coast. Not one his more exciting stories.

Great story, I would recommend it.

I loved the story and the way it was read out. The unexpected events, that followed Robin and Paul trip to Morocco was gripping and intriguing, I could not stop listening till I reach the end...

It snares you in, despite small irritations

I blew hot and cold with this story. Once the idyll (too saccharine) was exploded and the action started, it was non-stop till the end. I thought it was a good listen though, never boring, but why such exhaustive details of people's clothes, every glass of mint tea drunk, the monetary value of every interaction. At the end of it I was an expert currency converter. There were many places where I thought a bit more research was needed, and where the heroine acted totally rashly, especially as she was painted a very rational and pragmatic accountant. Narration was excellent. This was my first Kennedy novel, and I am happy to give another one a try.

so so story competently narrated

I'm afraid that this story rather dragged for me. I found the pace much too slow and that the writing was rather too flabby. it needed a sharp editorial pen. the narration was competent but no more than that. no attempt to do accents and little attempt made to distinguish between different speakers. l did mange to finish it as I was interested in the characters. but the end was a bit too happy ever after for me..

Compelling - in parts

A car-chase if a story, but one in which much of the “suspense” was transparent. It can’t decide whether it is a thriller or something more psychologically analytical. The protagonist convinces, and there is a very creepy complex adversary, but others are caricatures. Not the best listen if the last few months but still recommended.

Not his best.

I'm not sure why I persevered with this book. It irritated me - the main characters and the somewhat farfetched plot which seemed to be designed as a vehicle for the author to hang his various views. Too much untranslated French too!
