About this listen
Erik Keston, son of the Keston Real Estate empire, knows what it takes to be successful. Despite his inherent wealth, he holds his own. He works hard, he's grounded, he's brilliant. He's also secretly in love with his best friend.
Monroe Wellman lost his parents three years ago and never grieved, never recovered. Inheriting the family company and wealth means nothing, and his spiral of self-destruction is widespread and spectacular. Dubbed Sydney's bad boy, he spends more days drunk than sober, and the only person who's stuck by him through it all is his best mate.
But when Monroe hits rock bottom, Erik gives him an ultimatum, and his entire world comes to a grinding halt. It's not until the haze lifts that Monroe can truly see what he's been searching for was never in the bottom of a bottle. It's been by his side all along.
Contains mature themes.

Emotional story, stilted delivery
Having had issues with alcohol in the past, I approached this story with some trepidation. I adore the author’s writing and she always creates characters that are relatable - occasionally too much so for comfort! - and I wasn’t disappointed. Emotionally raw at times, but definitely not disappointed. I disagree with the reviewer who scoffed that all the crying was like reading about two women. Recovery from addiction is a leveller and makes sobbing wrecks of us all, regardless of sex, wealth, or anything else. When you’re in the middle of detox, with your insides cramping and you feel death might be easier, even grown men cry. Doesn’t make you weak, which I think is what was implied.
The story was good but for me the narrator wasn’t well suited to it. At times his reading felt quite mechanical and lacked the emotion to articulate the scene effectively. A story such as this needs the ability to convey a wide range of feelings through their voice alone. Sometimes the drama felt lacking and the sex was a bit cold. I feel Joel Leslie would have done it greater justice. But that’s just a personal preference.

Book is brilliant. Narration? Not so much
I've read this book a number of times and the author is one of my favourite in the genre. This is the first time however, that I've listened to the audio and unfortunately, it's terrible. It sounds like it's been read by an automated voice. There is no change to the voice to depict who is speaking and even when someone isn't speaking, there is no change to the pitch or tone of voice at all. I couldn't tell if the person was supposed to be happy, sad, angry etc.... it was just flat.
I'm going to stay away from N.R. Walker books that use this narrator, which is a shame because I genuinely love what she writes. I've bought several with Joel Leslie (whom I love to read both her books and those of other authors) but it's likely I'll return this one and just stick to reading the Kindle version of the book I've bought.
