Summary
865 A.D. Warring kings rule over the British Isles, but the Church rules over the kings, threatening all who oppose them with damnation. Only the dreaded Vikings of Scandinavia do not fear the priests. Shef, the bastard son of a Norse raider and a captive English lady, is torn by divided loyalties and driven by strange visions that seem to come from Odin himself. A smith and warrior, he alone dares to imagine new weapons and tactics with which to carve out a kingdom - and launch an all-out war between... The Hammer and the Cross.

Very well narrated and a good yarn
Really enjoyed it especially as it had a lot of historical facts. It also started in my home town Bridlington. Not so keen on its detailed description s of slow cruel deaths but it still deserved 5 stars.

The at of enjoying the wrong.
In this time when so many books are made in to films many of us have learned the skill of ignoring how much a film deviates from the book so that we can enjoy a great film without rage at the dedication of a great tome. So it is with this book and history, but it is well worth doing for this tale.
