About this listen

In one of his earliest cases, Ellery Queen confronts a murder in blue blood. From the very beginning, the Khalkis case struck a somber note. It began, as was peculiarly harmonious in the light of what was to come, with the death of an old man. Georg Khalkis, internationally famous art dealer and collector, died of heart failure. After his funeral, his attorney found that the will was missing and immediately called in the district attorney.

When Inspector Queen and his son, Ellery, are brought in to solve the mystery, Ellery mentions the one place they have not searched for the will: the coffin. Upon exhumation of the Khalkis coffin, they find that it contains not one body - but two!

Excellent

The Ellery Queen novels are quite superb. Well written, interesting and believable characters, humorous, logical and deductive. They are of their time, one result of which is that the language is different from today’s. This, for me, only adds to the enjoyment.

"Patience is bitter but it's fruit is sweet."

If the will had not been missing, the second body would never have been discovered. This cleverly written novel is a tapestry of suspicions and solving and further solutions - until the final reveal. This is no Agatha Christie where where the clues are displayed for the reader to succeed in determining the culprit, more constantly sitting sands as ingenious solutions are formed then discarded. There is enormous ingenuity and wit here revealed, nicely written and well read by Mark Peckham, whose voice has just the right seriously deep timbre and resolution for the period and character.

This book is !omg - approximately 13 hours - and a really fun read, though it demands attention to keep up. A story of a youthful, and rather self satisfied Ellery working his magic, and sometimes failing. A definite recommendation.

Another typically satisfying Queen mystery .

Delightfully broad and rich use of vocabulary, creating images and sounds that surprise and satisfy the listener beyond expectations. The plot as usual is complex and twisting to the end.

Convoluted and overly long

As with all Ellery Queen stories be prepared for many red herrings and an overly complicated plot. By the time I got to the end I had forgotten several of the earlier characters and rationale . The performance was ok but often the lead voice drifted including a disconcerting puzzled Roger Moore tone. Think ill try something simpler next time- maybe a le Carre or AS Byatt.

Good Narration

I do like this genre (but prefer Nero Wolfe). This is a little long winded for me for full enjoyment.

Blah blah blah ….

Should have been a short story instead of this self indulgent endless tome. In the end I just let it witter on in the background, but I really should have abandoned it hours before.

Most boring drawl

This would’ve been better as a short story- it dragged on too much. Not enjoyable at all.
