Summary
'I've occasionally been asked why it is that I need to go for a drink before watching the Albion play. I've always answered with something lame, along the lines of, "You wanna try watching us sober" ...where does this urge come from? I've raced off to games hours early to give me a chance to drink a lot of beer in a relatively short time...the craic is good, usually. Sometimes it isn't, Occasionally it's all rather boring. But I always make the effort. Why? Well....'
The popular broadcaster and columnist sets out to discover the unsung pleasures of drinking in moderation.
The recommended alcohol limit is 14 units a week. Adrian Chiles used to put away almost 100. Ever since he was a teenager, drinking was his idea of a good time—and not just his, but seemingly the whole nation's. Still, it wasn't very good for him: the doctor made that clear. If you lined them up, Adrian must have knocked back three miles of drinks. How many of them had he genuinely wanted? A mile?
There's an awful lot of advice out there on how to quit booze completely. If you just want to drink a bit less, the pickings are slim. Yet while the alcohol industry depends on a minority of problem drinkers, the majority really do enjoy in moderation. What's their secret? Join the inimitable Chiles as he sets out around Britain and plumbs his only slightly fuzzy memories of a lifetime in pubs in a quest to find the good drinker within.

brilliant listen
adrian delivers this with great witt with really funny stories about his drinking life but also full of very interesting facts information and cutting down tips , I've read most quit lit books this is totally different angle focused on moderating rather that stopping completely, he doesn't lecture just says how he cut down . brilliant book

Refreshing read
Refreshing read for those who wish to cut back but not give up and are fed up with being told sobriety is the only way. Full of interesting stories plus lots of practical tips plus and things to think about when trying to moderate drinking. Really enjoyed this book.

Sensible and easily actionable advice
I know I drink more than I want to. Not a drunk, not a ‘problem’ but the thought is nagging at me that it is too regular and it will catch up with me. Love drinking - some drinks - but drink un-needed drinks so this book was v helpful in unpicking that. Listened to it at 1.2 speed as it goes on a bit but a very worthwhile and not unenjoyable listen

Remarkably honest with humour
Although I spent most of my time nodding in agreement Adrian presents the moral dilemma of alcohol dependency in a social and medical perspective which has made me think about consumption vis a vie my health! Thanks

What’s fabulous listen!
Never give a book 5 stars because there’s always room for improvement- not here! Adrian speaks a lot of common sense with quite a few aspects for everyone to consider. Excellent book!

Must read for those looking to cut, not quit
Really refreshing and down to earth. Fantastic advice, and so much more refreshing for folks like me that genuinely want to cut, not quit.
As an ale drinker, I love the craft, the taste and the heritage of the ales I drink. ‘Never again’ feels like it’s just not going to work, especially given I was drinking ‘little and often’ with zero impact on my personal or professional life.
Will listen again.

Excellent and Relatable!
I found this a fantastic book and Adrian’s experience one of which is almost a carbon copy of my own, from excess to realisation that I’m the excess was pointless.
It is a non judgemental, non preaching, just the experience of how Adrian cut back his drinking and the evaluation process over time that lead to that.
